I\u2019m still trying to wrap my head around it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Getting to be part of something with this much history is pretty crazy. I\u2019m still trying to wrap my head around it.<\/p>\n<cite>New chimesmaster <strong>Andrew Arena \u201928<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In auditioning to become a chimesmaster, Arena took part in a Big Red tradition that stretches back nearly 125 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It all started in 1902, when archaeology professor Eugene Andrews dropped by President Jacob Gould Schurman\u2019s office to enthuse that the Chimes were being played \u201cbeautifully\u201d\u2014a situation that was, apparently, distressingly uncommon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? In the decades since the instrument had debuted on campus in 1868\u2014first on a temporary playing stand, then atop the Arts Quad&#8217;s McGraw Hall, and finally in the tower upon its completion in 1891\u2014the chimesmasters hadn\u2019t been appointed on the basis of musicianship. Rather, the positions were passed down from friend to friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" Cornell<\/em>, Schurman was getting tired of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a personal favor to me,\u201d the president told him, \u201cI ask you to take charge from now on, and try to evolve some system for selecting players who will give us music worthy of this splendid chime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The audition process that Andrews put in place\u2014including devising a practice playing stand from old boxes and a toy instrument\u2014set the foundation for a system that, though it has evolved over the years, more or less endures today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>As a personal favor to me, I ask you to take charge from now on, and try to evolve some system for selecting players who will give us music worthy of this splendid chime.<\/p>\n<cite>President <strong>Jacob Gould Schurman<\/strong> to Prof. Eugene Andrews<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The quest to become a chimesmaster is open to all members of the University community\u2014staff and faculty included\u2014who have at least two years left on campus, and have not competed twice previously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To try out, hopefuls\u2014known as \u201ccompets\u201d\u2014must be able to read sheet music (or learn to do so), navigate the nine flights of stairs, and be physically capable of pushing the levers and pedals that control the tower\u2019s 21 bells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no other instrument that prepares you to stand on one foot, shimmy around, and make music on bells,\u201d observes Chimes advisor <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/chimes-advisor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jennifer Courtley Lory-Moran \u201996, MAT \u201997<\/a>, who became a chimesmaster her freshman spring and has been the program\u2019s advisor since 2000. \u201cSo there\u2019s this leveling of the playing field, because nobody has done it before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>There\u2019s no other instrument that prepares you to stand on one foot, shimmy around, and make music on one Andrews created in the early 1900s, it allows them to hear their playing, but the sounds aren\u2019t shared with the rest of campus\u2014with many opting to practice daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the first four weeks, compets prepare for the \u201csilent audition,\u201d in which they perform the \u201cAlma Mater,\u201d the \u201cEvening Song,\u201d and the \u201cJenny McGraw Rag\u201d by hovering over the levers at the correct tempo (but not actually striking them).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven though it\u2019s silent, it\u2019s surprisingly not hard for us to determine how they\u2019re doing\u2014because we\u2019ve played it so much,\u201d notes chimesmaster Gianna Weidman \u201925, who oversaw the 2025 audition process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide hopefuls who typically pass the silent audition, the second phase is the concert-playing period. Around 10 p.m., she picked up the phone; it was Weidman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>They want to slowly add songs of greater difficulty to their repertoire. They can still play easy songs\u2014but it will be less impressive, and what they play helps us decide whether they should be a chimesmaster.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Gianna Weidman \u201925<\/strong>, who oversaw the 2025 audition process<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought if I did make it, it would just be some basic pleasantries\u2014but all of a sudden, I heard everyone cheering for me,\u201d recalls Wu, who\u2019d previously played piano and studied music theory. \u201cAll the chimesmasters were very supportive.
