He narrowly escaped death in a small plane crash in Alaska\u2019s Bering Sea\u2014and later endured another close call when he and his family were aboard an airliner that made a jarring emergency landing after an engine caught fire on take-off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as dramatic as those events were, in Larison\u2019s telling they pale in comparison to the existential threat facing all life on Earth: global climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now retired and living in Oregon, Larison shares those observations, and many others, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/57136793-on-assignment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>On Assignment: Memoir of a National Geographic Filmmaker<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-offset\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/On-Assignment-book-cover-A-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"The cover of the book &quot;On Assigment:\" class=\"wp-image-5253 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/On-Assignment-book-cover-A-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/On-Assignment-book-cover-A-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/On-Assignment-book-cover-A-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/On-Assignment-book-cover-A-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/On-Assignment-book-cover-A.jpg 1050w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Published in November by Chicago Review Press, the book recounts his long career making films around the globe\u2014from the icy heights of the Canadian Rockies to the depths of the Caribbean\u2019s Cayman Trench. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Publishers Weekly<\/em> calls it an \u201cexhilarating debut,\u201d noting that \u201cfans of the great outdoors will appreciate this introspective and sentimental outing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to chronicling Larison\u2019s assignments for NatGeo, PBS, and Discovery, the book is an affectionate reminiscence of a long and happy union: Larison and his wife, Elaine\u2014who wed at just 18\u2014have been married for more than half a century. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Realizing that they didn\u2019t want to endure long separations as his career began to flourish, she became a partner in his filmmaking endeavors; It goes on to recount such dramas as the fraught days after Larison\u2019s Alaskan plane crash: with communication to the Lower 48 spotty, Elaine\u2014pregnant with their first child\u2014is unclear how badly hurt he is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In another harrowing episode, Elaine suffers a fall during a climb down an ice field on Canada\u2019s Continental Divide and, adamantly refusing a rescue helicopter, hikes out on a fractured fibula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I viewed it as my mission in life to interpret science for the public.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPhilosophically, I believe that marriage works best when you share everything\u2014all goals and perspective and knowledge,\u201d Larison observes. \u201cI don&#8217;t see how anyone could do the kind of work we did without your family \u2018hooked to your hip,\u2019 so to speak. We never would have survived [as a couple] had Elaine not been as committed and eager to do it as I was; I lucked into a woman who would share that with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He adds: \u201cWhen you get married at 18, you grow up together; we grew in the same directions and wanted the same things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-offset\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"681\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/027.-Filming-Rescue-A-681x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Filming the re-enactment of a mountain rescue\" class=\"wp-image-5255 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/027.-Filming-Rescue-A-681x1024.jpg 681w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/027.-Filming-Rescue-A-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/027.-Filming-Rescue-A-768x1155.jpg 768w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/027.-Filming-Rescue-A-1021x1536.jpg 1021w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/01\/027.-Filming-Rescue-A.jpg 1047w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 681px) 100vw, 681px\" \/><figcaption>Larison (right) shoots the re-enactment of a climbing accident and rescue. <em>(Photo by Ken Parton)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>An Ithaca-area native, Larison studied wildlife sciences in CALS\u2014he was also in ROTC and completed his service as an Army officer during the Vietnam era\u2014and later earned a master\u2019s in environmental communications from the University of Wisconsin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He and his wife made more than 30 documentaries starting in the 1970s, including <em>The Living Earth<\/em>, <em>Saving the Great Whales<\/em>, <em>Signs of Nature<\/em>, <em>The Rockies<\/em>, and <em>Mammals of the Sea<\/em>. \u201cI viewed it as my mission in life to interpret science for the public,\u201d says Larison, whose work has garnered a variety of industry awards and honors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides filmmaking, Larison had a long academic career on the fisheries and wildlife faculty at Oregon State University\u2014work that spurred him to return to Cornell in midlife to earn his doctorate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Studying ecology and evolutionary biology and conducting research through the Lab of Ornithology, he wrote a dissertation on the toxic effects of heavy metal contamination in a Colorado mining region\u2014becoming the first to <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/10910356\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">identify cadmium as the cause<\/a> of a previously unexplained brittle-bone disease in white-tailed ptarmigan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter wp-block-heading\">A focus on the changing climate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Larison\u2019s documentary work involved capturing images in far-flung corners of the world over the course of decades; I\u2019d write a section of a film that I thought conveyed what was going on, and I\u2019d get crucified by people who objected to it being said.
