A celebration of some of the people, and history, behind Cornell\u2019s first national championship in nearly half a century<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just three days after berobed faculty and grads marched at Commencement, East Hill hosted another procession\u2014this one celebrating achievements on the athletic field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To mark the Big Red\u2019s historic victory in the 2025 NCAA lacrosse championship, the team was f\u00eated on Schoellkopf Hall\u2019s Tanner Terrace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The players, coaches, and supporters then walked down Campus Road to the Crescent Lot, amid the cheers of ecstatic Cornellians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And prior to the mini-parade, President Mike Kotlikoff and other University leaders honored the team’s seniors with a special graduation ceremony\u2014since, of course, they’d missed Commencement to play in the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 13-10 win over the University of Maryland\u2019s Terrapins marked Cornell\u2019s first national championship in nearly a half-century\u2014the previous one being when Big Red lacrosse took the title over Johns Hopkins in 1977.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m so proud as an alum, and as a guy that gets to work with them every single day. They have earned everything they have gotten, and I\u2019m glad we can enjoy this moment together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For these guys to achieve this goal and bring a title back to Cornell for the first time in 48 years\u2014I simply don\u2019t have the words for it.<\/p>\nHead coach Connor Buczek \u201915, MBA \u201917<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The championship game\u2014held in Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA, home to the New England Patriots\u2014was a match-up between the two top-ranked teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only was Cornell first in the nation coming into the tournament, but it was riding a 10-game winning streak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the outcome helped assuage the bitter memory of the last time the Big Red faced the Terps in an NCAA final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The championship game\u2014held in Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA, home to the New England Patriots\u2014was a match-up between the two top-ranked teams.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

That was just three years ago, in 2022\u2014when Cornell came achingly close to taking the title, only to have Maryland win 9-7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe biggest takeaway from the 2022 final is having a blueprint for how to build a team that contends,\u201d co-captain Michael Long \u201925 reflected in the lead-up to the tournament. \u201cThe seniors on that team left us something to emulate, and now we\u2019re in a great spot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier in May, the team had clinched the Ivy championship\u2014taking the title for the first time since 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe beautiful thing about this program is it\u2019s player-agnostic,\u201d says Long, whose dad, Steve Long \u201987, was also on the team. \u201cGuys come and go, but the culture is always set in stone, and carried down to the new players.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\u2018One of the Greatest Ever\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another co-captain, C.J. Kirst \u201924, BA \u201925<\/a>, scored six of the championship game\u2019s goals\u2014adding the tournament\u2019s Most Outstanding Player honor to his long and growing list of kudos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirst has been named Ivy League Player of the Year and a First-Team All-American, among other awards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as had been widely anticipated: a few days after the win in Foxborough, he took home the 2025 Tewaaraton Trophy<\/a>, given to the nation\u2019s finest collegiate lacrosse player. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0In early May, the CALS alum was the first pick in the Premier League Lacrosse (PLL) draft; chosen by the Philadelphia Waterdogs, he\u2019ll join his three older brothers in playing the sport professionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSimply put, Kirst is one of the greatest players ever,\u201d Jeremy Schaap \u201991 wrote in a co-authored ESPN story<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s his selflessness that endears him to his teammates and coaches. He clearly feels most comfortable not as a man apart, but as part of a team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

An Alum at the Helm<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the position since 2020\u2014when he was just 26\u2014Buczek is himself a former Big Red lacrosse standout. Previously named coach of the year by both the Ivies and the ECAC, he can now add an NCAA title to his r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe is both a coach and a friend,\u201d Kirst says. \u201cSometimes there can be a disconnect with a coach if they don\u2019t understand the players. But he builds relationships\u2014and knowing what he was able to do in the Cornell jersey, you inherently respect him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an undergrad, Buczek was a three-time All-American; set the record as top-scoring midfielder in Cornell history (at 155 points); and was named Ivy League Player of the Year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also won the Ronald P. Lynch Senior Spirit Award, given to student athletes \u201cwhose leadership on and off the field models the ideals of the Big Red athletics department.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He played professionally in the PLL and was named a league all-star in 2019; that year, he helped the U.S. win bronze in the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduating from CALS, he served as a volunteer assistant coach while earning his MBA. He accepted a job on Wall Street\u2014but changed his mind when he was offered a full-time assistant coaching position for the Big Red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a big leap of faith at the time,\u201d recalls Buczek. \u201cBut now in hindsight, I couldn\u2019t imagine myself doing anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Honoring a Lost Teammate<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

For many in the Big Red lacrosse world, the timing of the championship win had special significance and weighty symbolism\u2014coming 21 years after the tragic death of star player Mario St. George Boiardi \u201904, who wore Number 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Known as George, Boiardi was a four-year starter and team co-captain majoring in history in Arts & Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He died in March 2004, after a ball struck him in the chest during a home game against Binghamton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His number was later retired and his locker maintained as a memorial; he was inducted<\/a> into the Big Red Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.<\/p>\n<\/div>

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(The team’s only other retired number: 10, in memory of Eamon McEneaney \u201977<\/a>. An All-American inducted into both the Big Red and National Lacrosse halls of fame, McEneaney perished in the World Trade Center on 9\/11 after helping dozens of his colleagues escape.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The championship came 21 years after the tragic death of star player George Boiardi \u201904, who wore Number 21.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

A foundation<\/a> established in Boiardi’s memory is dedicated to helping elementary and high school students with the costs of extracurriculars. Its fundraisers include Ithaca\u2019s annual \u201c21 Run<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the championship game, Buczek wore Boiardi’s number on his ballcap, and a “21” helmet was displayed on the Cornell sidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Origins in 19th-Century Glory<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cornell\u2019s first-ever lacrosse game was informal: in 1887, a group of students recruited classmates and friends to play, and later that year formed a lacrosse association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first intercollegiate game was held on the Hill five years later. (Sadly, the Big Red lost to the University of Toronto, 10\u20133.) Its was the season\u2019s only official game, though Cornell played four the following year and picked up its first victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Big Red\u2019s first winning season came in 1894\u2014and the year after that, it defeated Harvard for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cornell lacrosse would go on to win its first intercollegiate (pre-NCAA) championship in 1902\u2014a feat it would repeat four times by 1916.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Last Time Cornell Took the Title<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The official name of Buczek\u2019s position\u2014Richard M. Moran Head Coach\u2014harkens back to an earlier era of Big Red lacrosse greatness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The legendary Moran led the team for nearly three decades (1969\u201397)\u2014presiding over a golden age, including all three of its previous national championships (in 1971, 1976, and 1977).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople just gravitated to Richie,\u201d Andy Phillips \u201984, MBA \u201986, president of the Cornell Lacrosse Association and a former Big Red midfielder, said in Moran’s 2022 obituary<\/a> in the Cornell Chronicle<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the larger lacrosse community, people often remark about the outstanding culture of the Cornell program. And the reason for that is Coach Moran. Plain and simple\u2014Richie was the difference-maker.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Richie Moran led the team for nearly three decades\u2014presiding over a golden age, including all three of its previous national championships.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Moran\u2019s teams competed in the NCAA tournament 14 times (including three times as runner-up), won 15 Ivy championships, and had 11 undefeated Ivy seasons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From 1976\u201378, Cornell won 42 consecutive games, a NCAA Division I lacrosse record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was such a notable era, in fact, that it inspired a book. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cornell University Press published We Showed Baltimore: The Lacrosse Revolution of the 1970s and Richie Moran\u2019s Big Red<\/em><\/a> in April 2022, just weeks before Moran passed away at age 85.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Buczek observed after the Big Red’s first NCAA championship since Moran’s era: “I know he’s looking down on us, smiling.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
