after berobed faculty and grads marched at Commencement, East Hill hosted another procession\u2014this one celebrating achievements on the athletic field. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To mark the Big Red\u2019s historic victory in the 2025 NCAA lacrosse championship, the team was f\u00eated on Schoellkopf Hall\u2019s Tanner Terrace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The players, coaches, and supporters then walked down Campus Road to the Crescent Lot, amid the cheers of ecstatic Cornellians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" University leaders honored the team&#8217;s seniors with a special graduation ceremony\u2014since, of course, they&#8217;d missed Commencement to play in the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 13-10 win over the University of Maryland\u2019s Terrapins marked Cornell\u2019s first national championship in nearly a half-century\u2014the previous one being when Big Red lacrosse took the title over Johns Kelly \u201926 (left) and Hugh Kelleher \u201924, BA \u201925.<\/figcaption><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cThe biggest takeaway from the 2022 final is having a blueprint for how to build a team that contends,\u201d co-captain Michael Long \u201925 reflected in the lead-up to the tournament. \u201cThe seniors on that team left us something to emulate, and now we\u2019re in a great spot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier in May, the team had clinched the Ivy championship\u2014taking the title for the first time since 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cThe beautiful thing about this program is it\u2019s player-agnostic,\u201d says Long, whose dad, Steve Long \u201987, was also on the team. \u201cGuys come and go, but the culture is always set in stone, and carried down to the new players.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>\u2018One of the Greatest Ever\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another co-captain, <a href=\"https:\/\/cornellbigred.com\/sports\/mens-lacrosse\/roster\/cj-kirst\/79337\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">C.J. He clearly feels most comfortable not as a man apart, but as part of a team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>An Alum at the Helm<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the position since 2020\u2014when he was just 26\u2014Buczek is himself a former Big Red lacrosse standout. Lynch Senior Spirit Award, given to student athletes \u201cwhose leadership on and off the field models the ideals of the Big Red athletics department.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He played professionally in the PLL and was named a league all-star in 2019; that year, he helped the U.S. win bronze in the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduating from CALS, he served as a volunteer assistant coach while earning his MBA. (Sadly, the Big Red lost to the University of Toronto, 10\u20133.) And the reason for that is Coach Moran.
