Big Red to Ivy, regional, and national titles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Melissa Newcomb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">\u201cWhatever you struggle with in life,\u201d observes <a href=\"https:\/\/cornellbigred.com\/sports\/equestrian\/roster\/coaches\/joanna-novakovic\/8034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joanna Garbarino Novakovic \u201904<\/a>, \u201cis what you\u2019re going to struggle with on your horse.\u201d It\u2019s a philosophy that Novakovic, the equestrian team\u2019s outgoing head coach, has long shared with her students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, she says, a reluctance to be assertive will be swiftly exposed and challenged on horseback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cThe theme of my training is, \u2018How can you build skills that are going to be good with your horse\u2014and also good in your life?\u2019\u201d says Novakovic, whose own accomplishments as a professional rider include winning four U.S. Equestrian Federation national 2014, the Human Ecology alum has tapped the wisdom gleaned from a lifetime in the saddle\u2014as a student, a competitor, and a trainer\u2014to lead her squad to notable success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, the former human development major is retiring from coaching, with plans to spend more time with family\u2014including husband Steven Novakovic \u201904, MPS \u201905, and dad James Garbarino, PhD \u201973\u2014and (of course) her horse, an 11-year-old hunter\/jumper named Eddie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The theme of my training is, \u2018How can you build skills that are going to be good with your horse\u2014and also good in your life?&#8217;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe has been a champion for her student-athletes, staff, and horses throughout her coaching career,\u201d Big Red Athletics Director Nicki Moore said when Novakovic\u2019s departure was announced, \u201cand has represented Cornell with excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Novakovic explains: coaching equestrian is a highly demanding role, entailing not just training the human athletes but managing care of the horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Big Red team, which had 28 women and 20 equines on its 2024\u201325 roster, competes throughout the academic year, hosting shows and attending them at other riders\u2014who are categorized by skill level and experience\u2014are judged on their ability to control their mounts through walks, trots, and jumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The animals are provided by the host schools; riders are randomly paired with them with no time to prepare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour equipment is alive\u2014and has its own personality,\u201d notes Novakovic, who holds a master\u2019s in marriage and family therapy from Syracuse University, which has helped inform her approach to training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA basketball coach can go home, leave the balls overnight, and not worry about them. But horses are delicate creatures. It\u2019s a lot of responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Big Red riders are expected to do weekly chores at the <a href=\"https:\/\/cornellbigred.com\/facilities\/oxley-equestrian-center\/14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oxley Equestrian Center<\/a>, such as feeding horses and cleaning stalls. The animals also get top-flight veterinary care, including chiropractic, acupuncture, and regular \u201cmani-pedis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a big commitment to be taking care of horses at six in the morning,\u201d Novakovic observes, \u201cbut it means you know the people on the team really want to be there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>She has been a champion for her student-athletes, staff, and horses throughout her coaching career, and has represented Cornell with excellence.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Nicki Moore<\/strong>, director of athletics<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And she should know\u2014having been riding practically since she was old enough to sit on a horse. She began taking lessons in her native Chicago and continued after her family moved to Ithaca at age 12, when her dad joined Cornell\u2019s psychology faculty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Now a professor emeritus, James Garbarino is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/members\/content\/advocate-juvenile-offenders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">internationally recognized authority<\/a> on adolescent males and the criminal justice system.
