Group gives members valuable experience in what it\u2019s like to work for a real-world software company<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Want to know when the next bus is coming to take you from Collegetown to the Ithaca Wegmans? Curious about what\u2019s on the menu at Okenshields, and how long the line is? Looking for a fun new fitness class, or places where you can play basketball on campus?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s an app for that\u2014all of it\u2014and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to a vibrant student organization, a variety of handy, Cornell-specific apps are available free of charge in the Apple App Store and Android\u2019s Google Play. Dubbed CornellAppDev<\/a>, the group\u2014comprising more than 50 coders, designers, marketers, and others\u2014not only creates useful tools for the campus community, but gives its members valuable, hands-on experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur focus is on improving students\u2019 lives; everything we make is intended to ease some sort of pain point they experience day to day,\u201d says Renee Hoh \u201922, an information science major and leader of AppDev\u2019s design team (the position will change hands for spring \u201922). \u201cOur work comes from a place of helping others\u2014building something that they\u2019ve always wanted, or never knew they needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 2014<\/a> by Eric Appel \u201916, AppDev currently has five original apps\u2014each of them developed and maintained by a dedicated team, known as a \u201cpod\u201d\u2014up and running, with thousands of active monthly users on campus and beyond. \u201cEatery\u201d was its first; it not only details menus and hours at dining halls and caf\u00e9s, but lets users keep track of their University-managed virtual cash, known as Big Red Bucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cIthaca Transit\u201d app gives riders routes and schedules, with bus locations updated in real time. An app called \u201cUplift\u201d provides information about the Hill\u2019s gyms and other exercise facilities. And \u201cVolume\u201d aggregates Cornell\u2019s many student publications\u2014offering readers a single, seamless experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The newest app, launched this semester, is \u201cPear,\u201d which encourages students to make friends by matching them with someone new each week, based on shared interests and campus involvements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, AppDev maintains \u201cCourseGrab,\u201d which lets students know when a spot opens up in a course they want to take, but is full. (Since CourseGrab originated with another team, it\u2019s what\u2019s known in the trade as a \u201clegacy\u201d app\u2014so by working on it, AppDev members gain insight into the common industry task of maintaining a product you didn\u2019t develop.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSeeing students use our apps is one the best feelings in the world,\u201d says Tewodros \u201cTedi\u201d Mitiku \u201923, AppDev\u2019s vice team lead (the number-two person in charge of the organization) starting in spring \u201922. \u201cBeing able to write code and then have your code be used is awesome. Many people want the work they do to have an impact; having that in college is such an honor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like most student project teams, AppDev admits its members through a competitive application and interviewing process. For many, a preliminary step is taking one of the for-credit, intro-level courses\u2014on topics like digital product design and iOS or Android development\u2014that AppDev offers, taught by students and overseen by Walker White, PhD \u201900, a senior lecturer in computer science and the group\u2019s advisor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A taste of working in industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As White notes, AppDev\u2014whose alumni include workers at a who\u2019s-who of tech companies such as Facebook, Amazon, Apple, and Google\u2014isn\u2019t just valuable for offering hands-on experience, which is ubiquitous throughout the CS curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe key thing is that the project teams are probably the closest approximation that a Cornell student would get to a real-world software company,\u201d he says. \u201cThe pod structure, the leadership structure, the ways in which ideas are incubated\u2014all of these are what they\u2019d actually see at a company. So they’re essentially getting professional training.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Sunday afternoon before Thanksgiving 2021, AppDev\u2019s full membership gathers in Gates Hall for a meeting to pitch ideas for spring semester. (Per the University\u2019s COVID-19 protocols in force at the time, such group meetings are allowed, but everyone is masked.) To get things rolling, the gathering starts off with some icebreakers\u2014like displaying toddler-age photos of members and having everyone guess who they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s great to say, \u2018Oh, it\u2019d be so cool to make that app.\u2019 But that\u2019s a big difference from, \u2018Could people actually use it to solve a problem?\u2019<\/p>Alanna Zhou \u201922<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Then\u2014with levels of efficiency and collegiality that many a meeting-weary professional would envy\u2014they get down to business. Each app idea is presented with a pitch and a deck of PowerPoint slides describing its potential utility, including feedback gathered through informal interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The candidates include apps devoted to aggregating on-campus events; finding student groups and clubs to join; reserving meeting rooms in University buildings; and collecting Yelp-like recommendations of things like study spots and places to park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please focus on whether you think there’s even a problem,\u201d says computer science major Alanna Zhou \u201922, who\u2019s running the meeting as AppDev\u2019s team lead. \u201cIt’s great to say, \u2018Oh, it\u2019d be so cool to make that app.\u2019 But that\u2019s a big difference from, \u2018Could people actually use it to solve a problem?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the pitches is one that, in an online vote after the meeting, will be chosen as AppDev\u2019s newest project: \u201cHitch a Ride,\u201d which will match Cornellians who need transportation with those who have cars and are willing to drive them in exchange for gas money, a sense of security on long trips, or just some company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt has always been a debate internally at AppDev: how many new ideas do we want to pursue, versus how many old ideas we want to keep working on?\u201d Connor Reinhold \u201922, AppDev\u2019s product lead, notes later. \u201cBecause we only have so many people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Given that students are busy with coursework and other activities, it generally takes two semesters for an app to go from concept to fruition. And sometimes, the group winds up cutting its losses and jettisoning an app after months of effort\u2014as happened with one intended as an alternative to the physical \u201ciClickers\u201d used in class for quizzes and taking attendance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was difficult to convince professors to use the app, so we pivoted off of that and jumped to a new idea,\u201d Zhou explains. \u201cSometimes people just don\u2019t need an app that we make. So we\u2019re super flexible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as she and fellow member Zain Khoja \u201922 observe, that in itself presents a learning experience\u2014particularly since, with AppDev, the final product is only part of the equation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to make sure that at the end of the day a student is benefiting from our work, but we also want to have growth for our members; there’s a good balance,\u201d says Khoja, an information science major in CALS. \u201cAppDev is an organization that\u2019s full of great people who are really devoted to not only learning these skills, but helping the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
