As an adult living in NYC, she was struck by how popular Mexican food was in the city\u2014but also by how little it resembled the nation\u2019s actual cuisine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter a visit home, I became reinspired by my cultural roots,\u201d Hern\u00e1ndez recalls. \u201cIt made me think, \u2018If someone wanted to make Mexican food in an authentic manner, how would they do class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sourcing cocoa beans.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Hern\u00e1ndez had grown up with staples like a cast-iron <em>comal<\/em> for making tortillas and a <em>molinillo<\/em> used to froth hot chocolate\u2014but she knew that the further one lived from the Southwest, the harder it was to acquire authentic Mexican products and cookware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tapping her experience in sourcing products for a large NYC department store, in 2007 she launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hernanmexico.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HERN\u00c1N<\/a>, a purveyor of premium Mexican culinary items, from specialty foods to kitchenware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All its products\u2014sold online, in gourmet stores, and in some restaurants and caf\u00e9s\u2014are sourced from Mexico. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Hern\u00e1ndez makes frequent trips around the country to source goods from artisans and partner with food producers to create proprietary recipes for specialty items sold under the HERN\u00c1N label. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of her suppliers are expanding beyond their local community for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Says Hern\u00e1ndez: \u201cMy mission has always been to do both: promote my Mexican culture and culinary traditions, and open up market space for producers who don\u2019t normally have access to customers outside their country or even their town.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>Hern\u00e1ndez makes frequent trips around Mexico to partner with artisans and food producers.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>HERN\u00c1N, which is based in Hern\u00e1ndez\u2019s Texas hometown, started with kitchenware, including cookware, prep tools, and clay serving pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its traditional <em>molinillos<\/em>, which comprise loose rings stacked around a handle, are hand-carved from a single piece of wood that\u2019s burned to create different hues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its <em>molcajetes<\/em>\u2014mortar-and-pestle sets for making guacamole, salsas, and other dishes\u2014are also hand-carved, from volcanic stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div (lime squeezer).<\/figcaption><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>HERN\u00c1N has since expanded to include foods like hot chocolate and different types of mole, the intensely flavored sauce made with chiles, spices, nuts, and other ingredients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its hot chocolate\u2014a combination of cacao beans, cinnamon, and sugar that comes in solid form and is whisked with milk\u2014is sourced from a family that has been making the rich drink for three generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2012, it won the \u201coutstanding hot beverage\u201d award from the Specialty Food Association. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>HERN\u00c1N\u2019s mole poblano was named best in its category two years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hern\u00e1ndez and her company have been featured in such major media as <em>Food &amp; Wine<\/em>, <em>Martha Stewart Living<\/em>, Food Network, and Telemundo, as well as in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g1YaLbTRye4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an episode<\/a> of AT&amp;T\u2019s entrepreneurship web series \u201cEscape the Cube.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <em>New York Times<\/em>, Hern\u00e1ndez was among the recipients of \u201clove letters to small business,\u201d a story that ran in the opinion section in 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img
