Samuel Ramsey \u201911 was terrified of them as a child\u2014but now he\u2019s a passionate advocate for celebrating and protecting them<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Samuel Ramsey \u201911 released a song on YouTube, the New York Times <\/em>called it \u201csilly, but surprisingly smooth.\u201d The 2021 tune, titled \u201cBig Red Eyes<\/a>,\u201d is sung from an unusual point of view: that of cicadas crooning a love song after emerging from living underground for 17 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ramsey is an entomologist\u2014one who has devoted his career not only to teaching and research, but to inspiring the public to love insects as much as he does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also known as \u201cDr. Buggs\u201d and \u201cDr. Sammy\u201d\u2014his nicknames on the educational YouTube channel<\/a> he has maintained since grad school\u2014Ramsey has been featured in a wide variety of media outlets including PBS, the Washington Post<\/em>, CNN, Wired, \u201cCBS This Morning,\u201d and the \u201cToday\u201d show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you learn about these creatures, you\u2019ll find there\u2019s a lot of charm to them,\u201d says Ramsey, an assistant professor of entomology<\/a> at the University of Colorado, Boulder. \u201cIf you can understand why they do the things they do, you may find a blossom of curiosity replaces your fears.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ramsey knows what he\u2019s talking about\u2014because as a child, he had a paralyzing terror of insects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you learn about these creatures, you\u2019ll find there\u2019s a lot of charm to them.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thought they were the most despicable, disturbing creatures on the planet,\u201d he recalls. \u201cIt got to the point that I was having nightmares about them regularly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wisely, his parents recognized the need to intervene; when he was seven, they took him to the library and told him to learn about insects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Ramsey observes: \u201cPeople fear what they don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He became a voracious reader of all things bug-related\u2014learning, among many other things, that insect and human behavior share many of the same motivators, such as hunger or fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He eventually made it his mission to humanize the six-legged creatures. On the Hill, he majored in entomology in CALS and went on to earn a doctorate in the field from the University of Maryland, College Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His creativity and playful, informal style\u2014as in a series of YouTube videos titled \u201cNew Bug, Who Dis?\u201d\u2014have resonated with audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His many spots on public TV and radio have included weighing in on \u201cmurder hornets<\/a>\u201d for NPR’s Short Wave<\/em> and appearing on WNYC\u2019s Terrestrials<\/a><\/em>, a Radiolab for Kids<\/em> podcast that explores the natural world\u2014and why it\u2019s stranger than we think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His creativity and playful, informal style\u2014as in a series of YouTube videos titled \u201cNew Bug, Who Dis?\u201d\u2014have resonated with audiences.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Ramsey is Terrestrials<\/em>‘ \u201cchief bug correspondent,\u201d showcasing insects like the tsetse fly\u2014whose bites spread disease, but which also plays a key role in protecting ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He travels the world conducting research, including in Singapore, India, Thailand, the Philippines, Japan, and South Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among his lab\u2019s ongoing work is the Honey Bee-nome Project, a multi-continent research effort to sequence the genome of every honey bee species\u2014as well as their parasites and diseases\u2014to help entomologists protect them and prepare for new outbreaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2022, Ramsey was named a National Geographic Explorer<\/a>\u2014joining a prestigious network of researchers, naturalists, and others who\u2019ve received grants from the global conservation and media organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Ramsey, that was a particular thrill\u2014given that he had so many Nat Geo<\/em> magazines as a kid, he\u2019d build a fort out of them, then sit inside it to peruse their pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019d read about people cutting through dense forests with a machete to find cool animals,\u201d says Ramsey. \u201cTo actually get to be that person, with my binoculars, finding different species of bees and showing them to the world\u2014it\u2019s amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
