But these critters have a serious mission: teaching kids about financial literacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Engineering alum Kelly Li \u201907 created the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.econforkids.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Little Economists<\/a> book series to give families and educators an engaging way to help children ages 4\u20138 understand basic monetary concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are seven books in the series, with more on the way. Most are titled with a question, like <em>What Is a Credit<\/em> <em>Card?,<\/em> <em>What Is a Stock?, <\/em>and <em>What Is Inflation?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><figure puppies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now based in the Bay Area, the former computer science major previously worked at a quantitative trading firm in NYC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Learning about finances and the economy shouldn\u2019t feel like a task\u2014if we can make it as fun as reading about puppies.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">She was inspired to write the debut entry in the series, <em>What Is Money?,<\/em> after having her first child in 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Looking for books that explain financial topics to kids, she failed to find any on the market and decided to make her own\u2014creating both the text and illustrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(For the series, she spells her last name as \u201cLee.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery alignwide has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped the importance of a different financial topic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>What Is Supply and Demand?,<\/em> for example, Hank and Ava want a frozen treat on a hot summer day, so they go to Charlie\u2019s bakery for ice cream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On arrival, they\u2019re disappointed to find that\u2014thanks to the economics concept of the title\u2014the line is long and the offerings are pricey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>Each book follows the furry characters on an adventure, where they learn the importance of a different financial topic.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But on a return trip in the winter, they find an empty shop and the ice cream discounted by 50%\u2014so they help Charlie create a warm marshmallow dessert to attract customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cParents tell me that after their kids read the books, they start to be more conscious of numbers and how much things cost,\u201d Li says, available on the Little Economists website and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/stores\/author\/B08SKNSYM4?ingress=0&amp;visitId=cb930cf3-2d36-4af5-929b-f3dded8a889b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on Amazon<\/a> (in paperback, in hardcover, and on Kindle). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Li, the series is used in numerous elementary schools in the U.S. and in Korea, where it\u2019s a resource for teaching English as well as finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, she says, an overseas publisher has acquired the rights to translate the series into Traditional Chinese for surprised to see that they also have grown-up fans: she regularly gets comments on her social media from adults who\u2019ve found them illuminating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI thought they\u2019d be bored, because the books are for kids\u2014but people tell me they get a lot out of them,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019ve gotten comments like, \u2018I didn\u2019t know that a minimum credit card
