{"id":48554,"date":"2025-03-13T07:43:55","date_gmt":"2025-03-13T11:43:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=48554"},"modified":"2025-03-13T07:43:56","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T11:43:56","slug":"marciano-weather-reporter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/marciano-weather-reporter\/","title":{"rendered":"Rain or Shine, Weather Reporter Rob Marciano \u201991 Is On the Job"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">A national correspondent for CBS News, the CALS alum is a veteran meteorologist who prioritizes the human angle in his work<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Joe Wilensky<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">\u201cBefore the sun rose over the Palisades fire, you could see the buildings still burning,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/robertmarciano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rob Marciano \u201991<\/a> says during a CBS News report in mid-January 2025, clad in protective gear as a foreboding and smoky orange California dawn shimmers behind him. \u201cHere we are on day four, and there are these hot spots smoldering just about everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marciano is reporting in the midst of what would become weeks of on-the-ground coverage of the state\u2019s devastating wildfires\u2014and the massive efforts to contain them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBurning debris is falling into the road,\u201d he says, the camera panning as he approaches a firefighting team to report on their progress. \u201cNo flames are too small to snuff out. By middle school, he\u2019d begun thinking seriously of meteorology as a career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI drove my parents crazy flipping the TV channels,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI knew when every weatherperson was on. I knew them by name, I knew their style, and I\u2019d emulate them and dream of one day becoming one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I drove my parents crazy flipping the TV channels. I\u2019d emulate them and dream of one day becoming one.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>After two years at St. Lawrence University, Marciano transferred to CALS as a junior majoring in atmospheric sciences and meteorology. After graduation, he landed his first forecasting jobs at local stations in Lake Charles, LA, and Portland, OR, before being hired at CNN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love the visceral experience, and I try to pass that along to viewers\u2014but we do toe a fine line of hypocrisy by saying, \u2018It\u2019s kind of dangerous out here; you should stay home,\u2019\u201d Marciano says of covering extreme weather in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very aware of that, and I\u2019m very aware of safety, not just for me, but for my crew. And it\u2019s again set to radically reshape the field in a shift that\u2019s already underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The last thing I\u2019d want my epitaph to read is \u2018Meteorologist who died of stupidity in a storm.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, Google released an <a href=\"https:\/\/deepmind.google\/discover\/blog\/gencast-predicts-weather-and-the-risks-of-extreme-conditions-with-sota-accuracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AI weather prediction model<\/a>. And in February 2025, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts brought its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecmwf.int\/en\/about\/media-centre\/news\/2025\/ecmwfs-ai-forecasts-become-operational\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artificial Intelligence Forecasting System<\/a> online\u2014which, it says, outperforms traditional physics-based models in both speed and accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t expect it to happen this quickly,\u201d Marciano says. \u201cBut here we go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Top: Marciano in front of a green screen, on air for CBS News.
