A passion project for Denis Ladouceur \u201902, The Canuck is a haven for his countrymen\u2014offering beer, poutine, and games on TV<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dozens of miniature Canadian flags, strung like streamers, arc across the ceiling. A wealth of hockey memorabilia lines the walls\u2014from player portraits and team photos to signed jerseys. Multiple widescreen TVs are tuned to sports channels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And watching serenely from above the well-stocked bar is a giant moose head\u2014nicknamed \u201cMonty\u201d in a nod to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe was an eBay purchase,\u201d notes Denis Ladouceur \u201902. \u201cWith the antlers, he barely made it in the door. But he\u2019s a perfect fit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcome to The Canuck<\/a>, a Canadian sports bar on 9th Avenue between 22nd and 23rd streets in Manhattan\u2019s Chelsea neighborhood. According to Ladouceur, the former Big Red player who opened it in late 2021, it\u2019s the city\u2019s only bar dedicated to all things Canada and ice hockey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its beers range from the typical Labatt Blue, Molson Canadian, and Moosehead varieties to more specialized offerings, like a hazy IPA from the Ontario-based Collective Arts and, from Qu\u00e9bec, a Belgian white Blanche De Chambly and the rare tripel ale La Fin du Monde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Specialty drinks include the Caesar\u2014like a Bloody Mary, but with Clamato juice instead of tomato\u2014and a maple old-fashioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(The bar offers two options for whiskey flights: \u201cEh\u201d and \u201cB.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other authentic Canadian menu items are the triple-decker club sandwich; a French dip (shaved rib-eye, caramelized onions, and provolone with horseradish sauce on a baguette); and Nanaimo bars, a no-bake dessert that incorporates a wafer-and-nut crumb base, custard icing, and chocolate ganache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, of course, there\u2019s poutine\u2014that quintessentially Canadian combo of fries, cheese curds, and gravy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got to get each one of those right,\u201d Ladouceur points out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cYou have to get the right type of potato\u2014which we do; we hand-cut them, and then they\u2019re brined. The peppercorn gravy is made in house. Qu\u00e9bec cheese curds are a little hard to get your hands on, so we got Wisconsin cheese curds, which are just as good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A native of Ashcroft, BC, Ladouceur majored in economics on the Hill, where he played forward for the Big Red men\u2019s ice hockey team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI loved, loved Lynah Rink,\u201d he says, \u201cevery bit of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1999, he won the ECAC\u2019s coveted Rookie of the Year Award. <\/p>\n<\/div>

But the plaque he has proudly mounted behind the bar is for his Greg Ratushny Award\u2014presented annually by the Cornell Hockey Association \u201cto a freshman player who best exhibits promise, camaraderie, and enthusiasm for the team and the University.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduation, Ladouceur played three years in the minor leagues, including a season with the UK\u2019s London Racers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was in that city’s Convent Garden that he and several teammates found a cozy Canadian sports bar, the Maple Leaf, that would serve as The Canuck\u2019s eventual inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe would go there all the time,\u201d he recalls. \u201cAs a Canadian in a foreign city, you want to go to a place that feels like home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ladouceur moved to NYC in 2005 to work in finance. Exploring the sports bars, he wondered: where was the city\u2019s answer to the Maple Leaf?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd to my chagrin,\u201d he recalls, \u201cthere was nothing even close.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It took a decade and a half to find the opportunity to create it himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking for a change of pace, he left his job as COO of a Wall Street firm just before the pandemic hit, and spent months doing research during the shutdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He found a former Irish pub that seemed perfect: it already had bar infrastructure, and Madison Square Garden was nearby. Chelsea Piers\u2014home to a rink frequented by recreational hockey teams and their fans\u2014was even closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once opened, The Canuck quickly began to attract a devoted crowd\u2014including many fellow countrymen who follow the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montr\u00e9al Canadiens, but also fans of the New York Rangers, New York Islanders, and New Jersey Devils.<\/p>\n\n\n

As a 2022 story<\/a> in the Athletic<\/em> (now owned by the New York Times<\/em>) observes, The Canuck\u2019s combination of d\u00e9cor, food, and libations \u201cmakes any patron who walks through the doors feel like they\u2019ve been transported north of the border.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One wall is covered with headshots of Canadian-born celebrities, from Justin Bieber and C\u00e9lene Dion to much of the cast of \u201cSchitt\u2019s Creek.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

License plates from every province form a giant collage, and shelves of knickknacks include souvenir hockey pucks and a DVD of the John Candy film Canadian Bacon.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bar\u2019s playlist includes Canadian artists from Neil Young and Alanis Morissette to Shania Twain and the rock band the Tragically Hip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the NHL season, The Canuck devotes most of its attention to hockey\u2014but the rest of the year, Canadian trivia contests, karaoke, and hockey movie nights fill the schedule.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ladouceur has partnered with the Canadian Association of New York on several of events, and of course, Canada Day (July 1) is always a celebration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re very open and friendly,\u201d he says, \u201cwhether it\u2019s welcoming our hockey crowd, or just bringing a little bit of light to Canadian culture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrity visitors have included current NHL player Sidney Crosby and Hall of Famers Mark Messier and Steve Yzerman; Dave Foley of the sketch comedy troupe the Kids in the Hall\u2014\u201che\u2019s a big Maple Leafs fan,\u201d Ladouceur notes\u2014and actors Elliot Page and Kiefer Sutherland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Fun fact: Messier\u2019s cousin, Ashley Messier \u201925, is co-captain of the Big Red women\u2019s team!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Canuck has also become a hangout for a cadre of devoted Cornellians, especially before and after Big Red events like Red Hot Hockey and the Frozen Apple, held at MSG in alternating years<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And while Ladouceur has recently resumed working in finance\u2014and is a new dad of a three-month-old\u2014he continues to run the business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been great to give Canadians a home in the city,\u201d he says, \u201cbut also to be a dedicated hockey bar, catering to the thousands of die-hard fans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
