{"id":47742,"date":"2025-02-14T13:02:05","date_gmt":"2025-02-14T18:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=47742"},"modified":"2025-02-14T13:02:06","modified_gmt":"2025-02-14T18:02:06","slug":"announcer-mintz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/announcer-mintz\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the Voice of Big Red Men\u2019s Ice Hockey (and Football!)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">For decades, Arthur Mintz \u201971 has served as the PA announcer for both teams\u2014making him a Cornell sports icon in his own right<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Melissa Newcomb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">On a Friday afternoon in late January, Arthur Mintz \u201971 sits in Lynah Rink\u2019s officials\u2019 box and reads the Harvard men\u2019s hockey team roster aloud\u2014though there\u2019s almost no one around to hear him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s all part of Mintz\u2019s pregame prep\u2014how he ensures he\u2019ll pronounce the visiting players\u2019 names correctly when he recites the starting lineups and announces the game action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On this particular day, it\u2019s also the calm before the Big Red storm: the sold-out arena will shortly play host to one of the most iconic rivalries in the Ivy League, the annual home game against the Crimson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Mintz doesn\u2019t get nervous\u2014after all, he\u2019s been the PA announcer for men\u2019s hockey since 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, let\u2019s face it: the Faithful won\u2019t be paying attention to the visiting lineup. Barlow Ware \u201947.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cArthur is a Lynah legend,\u201d says Jim Roberts \u201971, Mintz\u2019s co-author on the 2017 Cornell University Press book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornellpress.cornell.edu\/book\/9781501702600\/forever-faithful\/#bookTabs=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Forever Faithful: Celebrating the Greatest Moments of Cornell Hockey<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThe sound of his voice is such a part of being at a game. It\u2019s not just what he says; it\u2019s how he says it. It\u2019s so authoritative. When Arthur announces who a penalty is on, or who assisted on a goal, you know it\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Arthur is a Lynah legend. The sound of his voice is such a part of being at a game.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Jim Roberts \u201971<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Outgoing men&#8217;s head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/hockey-coaches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mike Schafer \u201986<\/a> echoes Roberts&#8217;s assessment of Mintz&#8217;s iconic status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Arthur\u2019s &#8216;Good evening, hockey fans!&#8217; welcome to Lynah Rink is legendary,&#8221; says Schafer, who will soon retire after three decades at the team&#8217;s helm. &#8220;Tradition is very important in our program and the game night experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But hockey isn\u2019t Mintz\u2019s only PA gig; he has announced Big Red football since 1986. And as he readily admits, his talents lie behind the microphone rather than on the playing field\u2014or the ice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m lacking a major qualification needed to become a hockey player: I can\u2019t skate. He grew up in Brooklyn, and he vividly remembers the first time his father took him to a Dodgers game at the team\u2019s bygone home, Ebbets Field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI walk out from under the stands to this huge expanse of green outfield, and I hear this \u2018voice of God\u2019 from the public address system,\u201d Mintz recalls. \u201cIt was my first experience ever going to a sporting event, and it drew me to care about the stuff that goes on off the field.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I\u2019m drawn to hockey because of the speed of the game, the skill that\u2019s required to play it, and the physicality of it.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Arthur Mintz \u201971<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>A math major on the Hill who also studied computer science, Mintz was an undergrad during a golden era for Big Red men\u2019s hockey. The team had won its first national championship in 1966\u201367, the semester before he matriculated\u2014and it took the title again in 1969\u201370, his junior year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mintz stayed in Ithaca after graduation, primarily working in IT for the University.
