she taught herself to draw by copying \u201cGarfield\u201d and \u201cCalvin and Hobbes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She published cartoons in her high school newspaper and, as a comm major in CALS, started a multi-panel comic strip in the <em>Sun<\/em> partway through her first semester\u2014running it more or less every day the paper came out until she graduated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>Solomon has been cartooning since childhood; she taught herself to draw by copying \u201cGarfield\u201d and \u201cCalvin and Hobbes.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dubbed <em>The Living End<\/em>, it featured a regular cast of characters navigating student life: studying, dating, making friends, finding off-campus housing, pledging a fraternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I first started it, it was \u2018a joke a day,\u2019 but later it became more serial, with longer storylines,\u201d recalls Solomon, who lives on Long Island with her husband and two tween-aged daughters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome of it was based on things that were happening to me at the time and some of it was just nonsense that I made up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduation, Solomon earned a master\u2019s in teaching at Columbia and began a career in education while pursuing cartooning on the side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her work has included designing greeting cards for an online company and creating illustrations for the <em>Menagerie<\/em> trilogy of young adult fantasy novels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, an imprint of Hachette published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hachettebookgroup.com\/titles\/janine-annett\/i-am-why-do-i-need-venmo-years-old\/9780762473335\/?lens=running-press\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>I Am \u201cWhy Do I Need Venmo?\u201d Years Old: Adventures in Aging<\/em><\/a>, an illustrated humor book based on a piece she and a collaborator did for <em>McSweeney\u2019s<\/em> that was among the site\u2019s most read articles of 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"761\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/I-Loveish-NYC-cover-image-A.jpg\" alt=\"The cover of &quot;I Love(ish) NYC&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-46391 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/I-Loveish-NYC-cover-image-A.jpg 500w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/I-Loveish-NYC-cover-image-A-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/I-Loveish-NYC-cover-image-A-260x395.jpg 260w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/I-Loveish-NYC-cover-image-A-329x500.jpg 329w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/I-Loveish-NYC-cover-image-A-164x250.jpg 164w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/I-Loveish-NYC-cover-image-A-82x125.jpg 82w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption>Her first solo book, garnering laughs from the Big Apple.<\/figcaption><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>It contemplates various absurdist life stages, like: \u201cI am \u2018super into dogs and clogs\u2019 years old,\u201d \u201cI am \u2018excited about composting\u2019 years old,\u201d and \u201cI am \u2018hurt myself putting on pants\u2019 years old.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her second book, a collection of humorous essays and cartoons titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chroniclebooks.com\/products\/i-loveish-new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>I Love(ish) New York: Tales of City Life<\/em><\/a>, came out the following year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s sort of a love-slash-hate letter to New York City,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd it\u2019s also a farewell letter, because it came out right after I moved to Long Island after 22 years of living in the city.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the 2024\u201325 academic year, Solomon is taking a teaching sabbatical to produce her first middle-grade graphic novel.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Tentatively titled <em>Such Great Heights<\/em>, it&#8217;s about a tween whose fear of heights curtails her plans to reconnect with some more-adventurous cousins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While she was thrilled to get a book contract, she was bemused by the pub date: 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis whole project was something that I wanted to create for my kids\u2014a story that is of the age that they are,\u201d she says with a laugh. \u201cBut I didn\u2019t realize how long it takes to publish a graphic novel.
