Decades after launching her first comic strip in the Daily Sun<\/em>, Ali Solomon \u201901 has her work published in the New Yorker<\/em> and beyond<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The single-panel cartoon depicts Gollum\u2014the loathsome, gargoyle-like creature from The Lord of the Rings<\/em>\u2014squatting in front of the counter at a \u201cWe buy gold\u201d store as the proprietor peers through a loupe at an infamous piece of jewelry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, yes. Definitely a forgery,\u201d says the caption. \u201cHope it didn\u2019t cost you much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The witty work, which ran in the New Yorker<\/em> in fall 2018, marked the debut of cartoonist Ali Solomon \u201901<\/a> in the magazine\u2014and in her field\u2019s major leagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Familiar to Big Red grads from the late \u201990s and early \u201900s for a long-running strip in the Daily Sun<\/em>, Solomon is a prolific cartoonist and humor writer who balances those efforts with a longtime day job teaching art in a Manhattan public middle school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was really, really exciting\u2014I lost my mind,\u201d Solomon says, recalling what it was like to see her cartoon in the magazine\u2019s august pages after years of submissions. \u201cI bought so many copies of the issue that it pretty much negated what I got paid for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, Solomon has had dozens more cartoons<\/a> run in the weekly print magazine and on the New Yorker<\/em>\u2019s website, which features a daily humor spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the entries are multi-panel and in color, like a roundup of \u201cnew uses for the Iron Throne\u201d (from the heyday of \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d in May 2019) that include repurposing it as dentist\u2019s chair, lifeguard station, ski lift, and pointy repository for Edible Arrangements bouquets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In July 2022, she offered \u201csummer reading assignments for adults,\u201d such as: \u201cRank the following books by how much money you spent in late fees at the library in order to finish them: The Goldfinch<\/em>, City on Fire<\/em>, War and Peace<\/em>, Middlemarch<\/em>, Dune<\/em>, Infinite Jest<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Solomon observes, the print New Yorker<\/em> tends to run cartoons that are fairly timeless, while the website allows for more real-time observation of current events.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

When it was announced during the COVID pandemic that New York\u2019s watering holes would have early closing times, Solomon produced a cartoon showing a lonely Humphrey Bogart alone at the Casablanca<\/em> bar with the caption, \u201cOf all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine after 10 p.m.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s funny, because with the New Yorker<\/em>, you never know when you\u2019re going to get published; the cartoon that ran in this week\u2019s issue<\/a>, I think I sold three years ago,\u201d Solomon observes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey post them online on Mondays\u2014and every Monday, all the New Yorker<\/em> cartoonists check to see if anything of theirs ran. And we\u2019re very good about letting each other know, \u2018Oh, I saw yours; you should look.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s funny, because with the New Yorker<\/em>, you never know when you\u2019re going to get published; the cartoon that ran in this week\u2019s issue, I think I sold three years ago.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the New Yorker<\/em>, Solomon has contributed to the venerable online literary humor magazine McSweeney\u2019s Internet Tendency<\/em>, where her work has included topical comic essays like, \u201cHello, I\u2019m the Internet, and You\u2019re Parenting All Wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has also published cartoons on the site, such as a sampling of \u201cJames Bond films for parents\u201d: A View to a Spill<\/em>; The Mom with the Golden Glue Gun<\/em>; PinkEye<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(It\u2019s something of a companion piece to a cartoon she did for the New Yorker<\/em> site on \u201cHitchcock films for city dwellers,\u201d which included The Rats<\/em> and The Next-Door Neighbor Who Knew Too Much<\/em>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other outlets for her work have included the New York Times Book Review<\/em> and the Huffington Post<\/em>, as well as her own Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among her favorite recent cartoons: a Wizard of Oz<\/em> joke<\/a> riffing on the \u201cIrish farewell\u201d that ran in the New Yorker<\/em> in September 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou had the power to leave all along,\u201d Glinda the Good Witch tells Dorothy, \u201cjust click your heels three times, grab your coat, and sneak out without saying goodbye.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admits Solomon: \u201cThat resonates with me, because I\u2019m shy and I\u2019m always looking for a way to leave a party.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Long Island native, Solomon has been cartooning since childhood; she taught herself to draw by copying \u201cGarfield\u201d and \u201cCalvin and Hobbes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She published cartoons in her high school newspaper and, as a comm major in CALS, started a multi-panel comic strip in the Sun<\/em> partway through her first semester\u2014running it more or less every day the paper came out until she graduated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solomon has been cartooning since childhood; she taught herself to draw by copying \u201cGarfield\u201d and \u201cCalvin and Hobbes.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Dubbed The Living End<\/em>, it featured a regular cast of characters navigating student life: studying, dating, making friends, finding off-campus housing, pledging a fraternity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I first started it, it was \u2018a joke a day,\u2019 but later it became more serial, with longer storylines,\u201d recalls Solomon, who lives on Long Island with her husband and two tween-aged daughters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSome of it was based on things that were happening to me at the time and some of it was just nonsense that I made up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduation, Solomon earned a master\u2019s in teaching at Columbia and began a career in education while pursuing cartooning on the side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her work has included designing greeting cards for an online company and creating illustrations for the Menagerie<\/em> trilogy of young adult fantasy novels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2021, an imprint of Hachette published I Am \u201cWhy Do I Need Venmo?\u201d Years Old: Adventures in Aging<\/em><\/a>, an illustrated humor book based on a piece she and a collaborator did for McSweeney\u2019s<\/em> that was among the site\u2019s most read articles of 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It contemplates various absurdist life stages, like: \u201cI am \u2018super into dogs and clogs\u2019 years old,\u201d \u201cI am \u2018excited about composting\u2019 years old,\u201d and \u201cI am \u2018hurt myself putting on pants\u2019 years old.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her second book, a collection of humorous essays and cartoons titled I Love(ish) New York: Tales of City Life<\/em><\/a>, came out the following year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s sort of a love-slash-hate letter to New York City,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd it\u2019s also a farewell letter, because it came out right after I moved to Long Island after 22 years of living in the city.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the 2024\u201325 academic year, Solomon is taking a teaching sabbatical to produce her first middle-grade graphic novel.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Tentatively titled Such Great Heights<\/em>, it’s about a tween whose fear of heights curtails her plans to reconnect with some more-adventurous cousins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While she was thrilled to get a book contract, she was bemused by the pub date: 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis whole project was something that I wanted to create for my kids\u2014a story that is of the age that they are,\u201d she says with a laugh. \u201cBut I didn\u2019t realize how long it takes to publish a graphic novel. By the time it comes out, my eldest daughter is going to be, like, 16.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
