They attract a variety of species including the pileated woodpecker (center) and northern cardinal (left).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany people see hawks as fierce predators, but it\u2019s quite different to see them being gentle with their eggs and caring for their tiny chicks,\u201d Eldermire says. \u201cWe\u2019ve gotten to watch an egg crack open and a baby hawk fall out of it\u2014really spectacular stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lab launched its Bird Cams project in 1998, when it started hosting a series of rudimentary nestcams. The hawks have alternated between two poles over the years, so the Lab of Ornithology has cameras on both.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cArthur returns with yet another stick &amp; gently places on BR,\u201d @CornellHawks tweeted one morning, along with a quartet of photos. \u201cBR stands &amp; departs the nest as Arthur takes over morning incubation duties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some viewers, the cams offer their first up-close look at the lives of birds\u2014and occasionally, they see nature red in tooth and claw. It\u2019s equipped with an infrared light so viewers can watch the birds\u2019 nocturnal comings and goings.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A couple of years later, a camera on a great horned owl nest showed the residents dining on similar marsh birds, like great egrets\u2014but since that cam\u2019s aficionados were rooting for the predators, they openly admired the owls\u2019 hunting prowess. Says Eldermire: \u201cA lot of it comes down to how you identify with the individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These days, some two million people view one of the Lab\u2019s cams each month. They serve as an educational tool for schoolchildren, as a neutral background in dentists\u2019 offices, as entertainment for housecats, as a welcome taste of nature for city dwellers, and pair of the birds\u2014banded by the national Department of Conservation\u2014that are nesting in the Taiaroa Head Nature Reserve at the end of Otago Peninsula.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had feedback from people who don\u2019t have great eyesight and put up the image really big on their screen,\u201d Eldermire says. \u201cThey say it has profoundly changed their relationship with the natural world, because they can see birds again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And thanks to infrared illumination, some cams even offer nighttime views\u2014allowing fans to follow their feathered friends 24\/7. \u201cI\u2019ve been hearing from a lot of people,\u201d he says, \u201cthat it can be really comforting to watch a bird sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><em>Follow the lives and habits of birds around the world with these other Lab of O birdcams (please note manmade burrow that\u2019s home to a breeding pair who were relocated there as chicks through a conservation program.
