Democrat Elissa Slotkin \u201998, who served three terms representing Michigan\u2019s 7th District, was elected her state\u2019s newest senator, defeating a Republican opponent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slotkin becomes the first Cornellian elected to the Senate since Mark Kirk \u201981 (R-Illinois), who finished the final months of then-President Barack Obama\u2019s Senate term and then served one full term from 2010\u201317. Slotkin is only the seventh Cornellian (including two who attended but didn\u2019t earn degrees) to serve in the U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Here\u2019s a look at the alumni currently serving on that other \u201cHill\u201d in D.C.:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-style-default\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Katherine Clark, JD \u201989<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A seventh-term Democrat, <a href=\"https:\/\/katherineclark.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clark represents Massachusetts\u2019s 5th District<\/a>, which includes a diverse mix of cities and towns north and west of Boston, including Cambridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has served as the House minority whip, the legislative body\u2019s second-highest ranking Democrat, since 2023. In addition to her JD, she earned an undergrad degree from St. Lawrence and an MPA from Harvard\u2019s Kennedy School of Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is part of a Cornellian family: her husband is Rodney \u201cScott\u201d Dowell, JD \u201989, and her father was H. He has also been a member of the Problem Solvers Caucus, the Republican Study Committee, the Border Security Caucus, the Congressional Coal Caucus, and the U.S.-China Working Group.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Meuser attended New York Maritime University (now SUNY Maritime College) before transferring to Cornell on a Navy ROTC scholarship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was an executive at Pride Health Care, later known as Pride Mobility Products, a healthcare products manufacturer. In 2011, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett nominated him to serve as the state\u2019s secretary of revenue; he led the department until he ran for Congress in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elissa Slotkin \u201998 <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The CALS alum is a Democrat serving as the newly elected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slotkin.senate.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">junior senator from Michigan<\/a>. After majoring in rural sociology on the Hill, she earned a master\u2019s from Columbia\u2019s School of International and Public Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slotkin worked as a Middle East analyst for the CIA, including three tours in Iraq as a militia expert, and in several defense and intelligence positions for the White House and Office of the Director of National Intelligence. In 2011, she moved to a senior position at the Pentagon and served as acting assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Melanie Stansbury, MS \u201907<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A Democrat, Stansbury was re-elected to a third term representing <a href=\"https:\/\/stansbury.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Mexico\u2019s 1st District<\/a>, covering the state\u2019s central area including most of Albuquerque; she had initially won the seat in a special election in 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has served on the Natural Resources; Science, Space, and Technology; and Oversight and Accountability committees. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduating from Saint Mary\u2019s College of California with a BA in human ecology and natural science, Stansbury earned a master\u2019s in community and regional sociology on the Hill and went on to a career in public service\u2014a direction she has said was sparked by a <a href=\"https:\/\/sce.cornell.edu\/ciw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cornell in Washington<\/a> course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stansbury previously worked on science, natural resources, and tribal issues in the White House Office of Management and Budget; was a staffer in the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources; and served as a New Mexico state representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beth Van Duyne \u201995 <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Arts &amp; Sciences alum is a Republican in her third term <a href=\"https:\/\/vanduyne.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">representing Texas\u2019s 24th District<\/a>, located in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When she first won her seat in 2020, she became only the second Republican woman from Texas elected to the House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has served on the Ways and Means and Small Business committees, as well as the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure
