Long sidelined by a contract dispute, star bridal designer Hayley Paige Gutman \u201907 is happily headed back down the aisle<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2024, Hayley Paige Gutman \u201907 updated her Instagram<\/a> bio with this message: \u201cI\u2019ve missed you.\u201d For the previous three years, Gutman had been unable to post to her 1.1 million followers under her own name\u2014or practice her profession as a wedding dress designer\u2014in the midst of a contentious legal battle with her former employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI never thought announcing myself would be an announcement in itself,\u201d she admits in a video she posted at the time. \u201cI am Hayley Paige. I want to shout it from the rooftops! I feel like a kid on Christmas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to the split, Gutman\u2019s Hayley Paige brand had become one of the most sought-after among Millennial brides\u2014renowned for designs that are both classically romantic and fashion-forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example: a gown called the \u201cWarren,\u201d which features an A-line shape with a deep V-neck, a keyhole back, a bodice beaded with iridescent rhinestones, and a flowing, side-slit skirt in layers of ivory organza.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cIf Hayley Paige is known for one thing, it\u2019s creating wedding dresses with a healthy dose of shimmer,” Martha Stewart Weddings<\/em> observed in 2018. “That, and designing her eponymous collection with a distinctly vibrant, youthful vibe and a dose of edginess.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gutman spent a decade building her brand under the umbrella of a multi-label bridal house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when the business relationship soured, a noncompete clause and other contractual issues stripped her of the right to use her own name, design wedding dresses, or control her social media accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t even go to Starbucks and have my name written on the cup,\u201d she says, \u201cor I was in violation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gutman\u2014who grew up in Northern California as the daughter of a surgeon and an interior designer\u2014had dreamed of creating wedding dresses since she was a little girl who watched Disney princesses live happily ever after.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She learned to sew from her grandmother; when she created her own prom gown, she says, \u201cit looked like a wedding dress. It was straight-up white and it had tulle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I couldn\u2019t even go to Starbucks and have my name written on the cup or I was in violation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

On the Hill, she majored in fiber science and apparel design and was a varsity gymnast who\u2019d competed internationally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her senior collection for the annual fashion show? You guessed it: Bridal gowns.<\/p>\n\n\n

Gutman\u2019s decade-long rise in the industry included building a large social media following and regularly appearing on the long-running TLC reality show \u201cSay Yes to the Dress,\u201d which follows women searching for the perfect bridal gown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have a slight-to-major Hayley Paige obsession,\u201d a bride-to-be admits on one episode. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m a little bit in love with her. I kind of want to be best friends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(As the same bride also observes: \u201cShe\u2019s like a little fairy princess, and I want to hug her.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Gutman\u2019s enforced hiatus from wedding dresses, she began designing shoes under a new brand, She Is Cheval<\/a>. (The word is the French term for horse.)<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

She also launched a new Instagram, calling herself \u201cA Girl You Might Know\u201d\u2014and let followers connect the dots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was positive momentum that I really needed. I felt like I had the support of the public court, even if I wasn\u2019t doing well in the federal court,\u201d Gutman recalls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was validation that I was doing the right thing in fighting back, and somehow it will work out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As litigation dragged on, the case garnered national media coverage, including in Cosmopolitan<\/em>, People<\/em>, Newsweek<\/em>, \u201cGood Morning America,\u201d and elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After an appeals court restored ownership of her social accounts in spring 2024, she and her former employer reached a settlement, with Gutman retaining her designs, trademarks, copyrights\u2014and most importantly, her name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt like I had the support of the public court, even if I wasn\u2019t doing well in the federal court.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In July 2024, several months after the Federal Trade Commission proposed a nationwide ban on noncompete agreements, Gutman testified before a Congressional subcommittee about the harm such clauses can cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Says Gutman: \u201cIt was such justice to go to the U.S. Senate and get to share my entire story, start to finish, accurately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(A federal court in Texas struck down the FTC ban in August 2024; the agency is appealing the decision.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the wake of her legal battle, Gutman\u2014who says she signed her original contract in her mid-20s, without representation by an attorney\u2014created a nonprofit, the A Girl You Might Know Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

It\u2019s dedicated to giving artists and entrepreneurs\u2014particularly young women\u2014access to legal advice and other resources to help protect their rights in the business world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gutman\u2019s new line of bridal attire is set to debut in 2025\u2014and she aims to return to \u201cSay Yes to the Dress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m excited to take some of my best-selling, iconic pieces and bring them back in an elevated and fresh way,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m recapturing my signature aesthetic, but also showing I\u2019ve gained some lessons along the way. More grit to my grace.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>
