Decades ago, a male-female ursine duo stole the show at sports games and other events<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once upon a time, there were two bears\u2014two Big Red Bears, that is. From the late 1980s through the early 2000s, it was common to see the ursine couple galivanting at hockey, lacrosse, and football games, as well as at a slew of other events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was an era long before the current Touchdown<\/a>; in fact, the mascots weren\u2019t even called \u201cTouchdown\u201d then, but simply the Big Red Bears\u2014or, when appearing together as a male-female duo, \u201cMr. and Mrs. Bear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Previously, the name \u201cTouchdown\u201d had only been used for the live cubs that served as Big Red mascots from 1915\u201319 and again in 1939. The student organization that oversees Touchdown today is still called the Big Red Bears<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bear couple typically showed up at home football and hockey games, along with occasional appearances on the road. <\/p>\n<\/div>

The \u201cgirl bear,\u201d as she was also sometimes called, would typically wear a skirt instead of trousers, with a bow over one ear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The female bear was first brought to life at Homecoming in 1988. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the University exulted in an advance press release: “While the Yale Bulldog scowls in loneliness on the opposite side of the field at the game Saturday afternoon, Cornell’s Big Red Bear will cavort joyfully with a red-ribboned companion as the nation looks on.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, at least one tantalizing tidbit in our research suggests that it was not a true debut, but the revitalization of an old tradition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1989 Cornellian<\/em> yearbook says the weekend \u201cwas highlighted by a return to the past, as Greek organizations staged a float parade down East Avenue [and] the female Cornell bear joined her male counterpart in the festivities … [M]any alumni remembered the female bear, which disappeared years ago for reasons unknown.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karen Hovorka \u201992 was that first female bear in fall 1988, joining that year\u2019s male one, Andy Reinach \u201991, MEng \u201992.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think the donor of the costumes was an alumna from the \u201950s or \u201960s,\u201d Hovorka recalls, \u201cand it was her wish to have a female bear\u2014because why should Cornell be represented only by a male bear, especially in the more progressive times of the late \u201980s?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cbear supervisor\u201d at the time asked Reinach if he knew of a woman who\u2019d like to fill the role, and he tapped Hovorka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why should Cornell be represented only by a male bear, especially in the more progressive times of the late \u201980s?<\/p>\nFormer \u201cMrs. Bear\u201d Karen Hovorka \u201992<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

She vividly recalls the female bear\u2019s debut: \u201cAndy and I rode in an old classic convertible car in the Homecoming parade down Tower Road and in front of Day Hall. The game was on the ESPN \u2018College Game of the Week\u2019\u2014and we were even shown live for a couple of seconds as they broke for a commercial.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being a bear that semester was \u201ca fun gig,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe bears ran out on the field with the football team, cheered with the cheerleaders, danced with the band, and sometimes pantomimed fighting with the opposing team\u2019s mascot,\u201d recalls Hovorka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also walked around the stands\u2014and even took part in a tradition in which the bears were passed from row to row.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was kind of freaky to let go and hope no one drops you,\u201d she admits. \u201cOnce, while being passed up, someone took my sneaker off and I heard them say, \u2018I have the girl bear\u2019s shoe!\u2019 Unfortunately, I never got it back and had to walk back to my dorm after the game with only one sneaker.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the addition of the female bear was a hit in Schoellkopf that fall, Mrs. Bear also joined the festivities at hockey games. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Skating was out of Hovorka\u2019s skill set, but her RA enthusiastically volunteered.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Lynah\u2019s ice, the bears developed additional traditions: putting on a full 10-minute show between periods, dancing, horsing (bear-<\/em>ing?!) around, and doing stunts, like handstands atop the goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Says skating bear Jon Schoenberg \u201903, PhD \u201911: \u201cI vaguely remember tripping or falling and having the head fall off at least once.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps most memorably, during second intermission at the last home game of the season, the bears would remove their costumes piece by piece\u2014ultimately removing the heads and revealing their identities to the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among them was Eva Chiamulera \u201997, MA \u201900, who typically skated as Mrs. Bear with Patrick Carr \u201996, PhD \u201904.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe both played hockey, so we\u2019d do a lot of hockey-like stuff,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019d faux-fight, or one of us would lie down on the ice and the other would jump over them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surprisingly, she recalls that wearing the bear costume wasn\u2019t much different from skating in a hockey helmet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVisibility-wise, I don\u2019t remember it being that bad,\u201d she observes. \u201cYou just had to be self-aware, and intuitively know where stuff is.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

But, she adds: \u201cIt was important to stay out of the way of the Zamboni.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
