As <em>Kirkus<\/em> observes: \u201cEven the Loch Ness monster makes an appearance in this kaleidoscopic epic with deep roots in both history and myth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.signepike.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">comm major<\/a> in CALS, Pike also published the travel memoir <em>Faery Tale: One Woman\u2019s Search for Enchantment in a Modern World<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Perversity of Gratitude<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Grant Farred<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Farred is <a href=\"https:\/\/africana.cornell.edu\/grant-farred\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a professor<\/a> of Africana studies in Arts &amp; Sciences, Aniket holds an MBA from Columbia. In this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/211416025-krishnaniti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nonfiction book<\/a>, subtitled <em>Timeless Strategic Wisdom<\/em>, he and his coauthor offer 11 lessons in strategy drawn from the Indian epic, the<em> Mahabharata<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the book\u2014which they call the first of its kind\u2014the authors compile all of the <em>niti<\/em> (Sanskrit for \u201cguidance\u201d) given by the deity Krishna in the <em>Mahabharata<\/em> on such topics as personal conduct, morality, policy, governance, and law, drawn from multiple editions of the epic.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe <em>Mahabharata<\/em> presents Krishna as the strategist par excellence,\u201d they write. \u201cHe is as worldly wise as he is spiritually enlightened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Architecture of Urbanity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vishaan Chakrabarti \u201987, BS \u201988<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pau.studio\/who\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The founder<\/a> of a prominent NYC-based architecture and urban planning firm, Chakrabarti is also a visiting critic in the College of Architecture, Art &amp; Planning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His <a href=\"https:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/books\/hardcover\/9780691208435\/the-architecture-of-urbanity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nonfiction book<\/a>, from Princeton University Press, argues that his field can play an essential role in addressing such challenges as climate change and political divisions through thoughtful urban design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA city is a cultural, social, political, economic, and infrastructural construct, formed as much through people, policy, and advocacy as it is through physicality,\u201d he writes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/arch-of-urbanity-A.jpg\" alt=\"The cover of &quot;The Architecture of Urbanity&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-45214 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/arch-of-urbanity-A.jpg 500w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/arch-of-urbanity-A-205x300.jpg 205w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/arch-of-urbanity-A-270x395.jpg 270w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/arch-of-urbanity-A-342x500.jpg 342w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/arch-of-urbanity-A-171x250.jpg 171w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/12\/arch-of-urbanity-A-85x125.jpg 85w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCities have always been my fascination because they spatially mediate between people and the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chakrabarti earned undergrad degrees from both Arts &amp; Sciences (art history) and Engineering (operations research).
