Cross-Cultural Harlem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sandhya Shukla \u201988<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this nonfiction book<\/a>, Shukla explores how the influences of various racial and ethnic groups have intersected over the decades to create the Manhattan neighborhood long seen as a center of Black culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOver the course of the 20th and 21st centuries, Harlem has been the capital of both Black America and a global African diaspora, an early home for Italian and Jewish immigrant communities, an important Puerto Rican neighborhood, and a representative site of gentrification,\u201d states the publisher, Columbia University Press. <\/p>\n<\/div>

\"The<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow do we understand the power of a place with so many claims and identifications?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A former government major in Arts & Sciences, Shukla is an associate professor<\/a> of English and American studies at the University of Virginia. She previously penned India Abroad: Diasporic Cultures of Postwar America and England<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Shadowed Land<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Signe Pike \u201903<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This historical fantasy novel<\/a> is the third\u2014but not final\u2014entry in Pike\u2019s Lost Queen<\/em> series, set in Scotland during the 6th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThose who have read The Lost Queen<\/em> (2018) and The Forgotten Kingdom<\/em> (2020) will be right at home as Pike continues her chronicle of the swirling intrigue and bloody confrontations among the Britons, Picts, Scots, Angles, Christians, and other kingdoms and ethnicities of the Arthurian period,\u201d says Kirkus<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pike\u2019s queenly heroine, Languoreth, is the twin sister of the real-life person who inspired the character of Merlin in Arthurian legend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

(And yes, Arthur\u2014here called Art\u00far mac Aedan\u2014has a role in the book as well.) As Kirkus<\/em> observes: \u201cEven the Loch Ness monster makes an appearance in this kaleidoscopic epic with deep roots in both history and myth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A former comm major<\/a> in CALS, Pike also published the travel memoir Faery Tale: One Woman\u2019s Search for Enchantment in a Modern World<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Perversity of Gratitude<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Grant Farred<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farred is a professor<\/a> of Africana studies in Arts & Sciences. His book<\/a>, published by Temple University Press, has been described as a \u201cphilosophical memoir<\/a>.\u201d The volume is part reflection on the author\u2019s upbringing in South Africa during the Apartheid era, and part critique of the unjust system that, ironically, allowed him to thrive intellectually thanks to several outstanding teachers in the segregated schools he attended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cApartheid made me think,\u201d he writes in the preface, \u201cand, as such, my apartheid education constituted the optimal conditions for thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/div>

\"The<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Farred\u2019s many previous books include An Essay for Ezra<\/em>\u2014observations on racial violence and white supremacy, addressed to his biracial son\u2014and In Motion, At Rest<\/em>, which parses the deeper societal meanings of three infamous events in the world of sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Krishna-Niti<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Kushagra Aniket \u201915<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A management consultant<\/a> who majored in economics, math, and statistics in Arts & Sciences, Aniket holds an MBA from Columbia. In this nonfiction book<\/a>, subtitled Timeless Strategic Wisdom<\/em>, he and his coauthor offer 11 lessons in strategy drawn from the Indian epic, the Mahabharata<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the book\u2014which they call the first of its kind\u2014the authors compile all of the niti<\/em> (Sanskrit for \u201cguidance\u201d) given by the deity Krishna in the Mahabharata<\/em> on such topics as personal conduct, morality, policy, governance, and law, drawn from multiple editions of the epic.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Mahabharata<\/em> presents Krishna as the strategist par excellence,\u201d they write. \u201cHe is as worldly wise as he is spiritually enlightened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Architecture of Urbanity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Vishaan Chakrabarti \u201987, BS \u201988<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The founder<\/a> of a prominent NYC-based architecture and urban planning firm, Chakrabarti is also a visiting critic in the College of Architecture, Art & Planning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His nonfiction book<\/a>, from Princeton University Press, argues that his field can play an essential role in addressing such challenges as climate change and political divisions through thoughtful urban design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA city is a cultural, social, political, economic, and infrastructural construct, formed as much through people, policy, and advocacy as it is through physicality,\u201d he writes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/div>

\"The<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCities have always been my fascination because they spatially mediate between people and the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chakrabarti earned undergrad degrees from both Arts & Sciences (art history) and Engineering (operations research). His firm, Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU), has worked on such high-profile projects as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, NYC\u2019s Penn Station, and the repurposing of the former Domino Sugar Refinery in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
