First, the students work together to assess how the calf is positioned inside her mother, so they can determine how best to assist with the birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students correct the position of the limbs and head before carefully placing chains around two legs and a loop behind the ears to help pull the baby out. They\u2019re life-sized models, recently acquired by the Vet College, that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vet.cornell.edu\/research\/faculty\/taika-von-konigslow-bsch-msc-dvm-dvsc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taika von K\u00f6nigsl\u00f6w<\/a> uses to instruct fourth-year students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> (Their names? He\u2019s Tyler Ward, a first-year PhD student who\u2019s researching the efficacy of these types of exercises in teaching clinical skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, students have found the hands-on training to be (sorry, we can\u2019t help ourselves) udder-ly valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis gives us a realistic way to learn these life-saving skills,\u201d says fourth-year Kate Loonie, \u201cso we\u2019re better prepared for when it\u2019s real.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>This gives us a realistic way to learn these life-saving skills so we\u2019re better prepared for when it\u2019s real.<\/p>\n<cite>Fourth-year vet student <strong>Kate Loonie<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Birtha and Decalf debuted in September 2024, they\u2019ve been used by more than two dozen students in small groups. By the end of the academic year, all 126 members of the Class of \u201925 will have undergone the experiential training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the pair doesn\u2019t just provide birthing lessons.
