Cornell Chronicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>James Dean<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">When she arrived in Ithaca in 1924 to pursue a master\u2019s degree, Pearl Sydenstricker Buck, MA \u201925, was an aspiring novelist; her husband, John Lossing Buck 1914, MS \u201925, PhD \u201933, was a star acolyte of farm economist George Warren, namesake of CALS\u2019 Warren Hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next academic year, Pearl received influential mentorship from English professor Martin Sampson, with whom she would share the manuscript of her first novel, and gained the confidence to pursue a writing career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time the couple returned to Ithaca from China\u2014this time so Lossing, as he was known, could begin doctoral studies\u2014Pearl was a household name, newly crowned winner of the Pulitzer Prize in fiction for <em>The Good Earth<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Five years later she would become the first American woman awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelprize.org\/prizes\/literature\/1938\/buck\/biographical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nobel Prize in Literature<\/a>, \u201cfor her rich and truly epic descriptions of peasant life in China.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Toni Morrison, MA \u201955, <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/nobel-prize\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was the second<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, 86 years after she accepted the Nobel medal in Sweden, a historic marker will commemorate Pearl\u2019s work as a writer and humanitarian who introduced and championed Chinese culture to millions in the West, and the local community\u2019s significance in her career.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img Home Chapel, on Forest Home Drive\u2014where the couple lived in 1924\u201325.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a brief but formative period for Pearl, because this is where she really delved into and was encouraged in her writing,\u201d says city and regional planning professor <a href=\"https:\/\/aap.cornell.edu\/people\/thomas-j-campanella\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thomas Campanella, MLA \u201991<\/a>, who spearheaded the initiative. \u201cI wanted to help restore her legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campanella, a Forest Home resident, has found himself crossing paths with the Bucks numerous times, starting when he discovered <em>The Good Earth<\/em> as a teenager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It was a brief but formative period for Pearl, because this is where she really delved into and was encouraged in her writing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He spent time at Nanjing University, where the Bucks taught for years, and visited the attic writing room (now a museum) where Pearl wrote <em>The Good Earth<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More recently, a grandson of Lossing\u2019s through a later marriage\u2014he and Pearl divorced in 1935\u2014was a student of city and regional planning on the Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pearlsbuck.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pearl Sydenstricker<\/a> was born in West Virginia but raised in China by Presbyterian missionaries with Mandarin as her first language, and developed a keen interest in the lives of the Lossing in 1920 had a daughter, Carol, who was severely disabled, and whom Pearl\u2019s writing helped support. Professionally, the pair developed an \u201cextraordinary partnership\u201d in China, Campanella wrote in a 2018 book chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lossing was invited to join Nanjing University as a professor and acting dean of an agriculture college modeled on what is now CALS. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He produced the first and most extensive survey of Chinese agriculture\u2014a project in which Campanella says Pearl played a vital role through her interviews with farmers, who trusted her personality and fluency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without that experience, Pearl, in turn, might never have written <em>The Good Earth<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book effectively was banned in China after 1949, and she was not allowed to return. Ironically, Campanella says, <em>The Good Earth<\/em> may be better known there today than in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a 2001<em> New York Times<\/em> article, Nanjing University Professor Liu Haiping called Buck \u201crevolutionary \u2026 the first writer to choose rural China as her subject matter. None of the Chinese writers would have done so; intellectuals wrote about urban intellectuals. Many of us feel we should include Buck as part of Chinese literature.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>Ironically, Campanella says, <em>The Good Earth<\/em> may be better known in China today than in the U.S.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Buck, who died in 1973, went on to write many more books, including novels, non-fiction, translations, biographies, and books for children and young adults. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was working on <em>The Good Earth<\/em> trilogy\u2019s second book when she and Lossing returned to Ithaca in 1932, then living on Wyckoff Road in Cayuga Heights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI relish getting people to understand and value the history that\u2019s all about them, and this is a very visceral and high-profile way of telling stories about individuals who have passed through a place before us,\u201d Campanella says of the creation and installation of historic markers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe move fast as a culture, and the past recedes quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Top: Campanella with the marker prior to its installation.
