While the internationally popular \u201cCosmos\u201d series and late-night TV appearances with Johnny Carson helped make Carl Sagan a beloved public figure, some peers questioned the seriousness of such outreach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as a member of NASA\u2019s Voyager 1 mission, managers rejected his pleas for years before finally agreeing to point the distant spacecraft back toward Earth for a final photo, producing the iconic \u201cPale Blue Dot<\/a>\u201d image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey would say to him, \u2018Carl, what\u2019s the scientific virtue of seeing the Earth as a single dot?\u2019\u201d remembered Ann Druyan, Sagan\u2019s widow and longtime collaborator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut he never gave up, and ultimately, he succeeded in seeing the world how it really is: tiny, fragile. And it was Carl who could \u2026 make us look in wonder at ourselves and each other and realize how pathetic and how futile our conflicts are in the face of the vastness of space and time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Druyan, an Emmy and Peabody award-winning writer, producer, and director, joined the Carl Sagan Institute<\/a> (CSI) on November 9 for a celebration of the legendary Cornell astronomy professor\u2014who died in 1996 at age 62\u2014on what would have been his 90th birthday, honoring his passion for scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and sharing the universe\u2019s beauty and mystery.<\/p>\n\n\n

Part of the College of Arts & Sciences\u2019 Arts Unplugged<\/a> series, the public event was streamed live<\/a> to an audience of more than 2,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to tributes from loved ones and admirers, the four-hour program in Call Auditorium presented CSI researchers\u2019 latest interdisciplinary work on the search for life beyond Earth that is advancing Sagan\u2019s legacy, musical performances, and\u2014fittingly\u2014a greeting from space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCarl Sagan inspired countless people worldwide as he shared the wonder of the cosmos, and I know he would appreciate the view that I have from this place,\u201d NASA astronaut Don Pettit wrote from the International Space Station, where humans have lived continuously for 24 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe cared deeply about our planet and keenly questioned whether worlds circling other stars could harbor life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Joe Dervay \u201980, a NASA flight surgeon and CALS alum, read Pettit\u2019s message and recalled Sagan\u2019s influence on campus and on his generation, as a teacher and \u201cpart of the fabric of our culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other prominent well-wishers offering video tributes included \u201cScience Guy\u201d Bill Nye \u201977; actor and science communicator Alan Alda; leaders of the nonprofit SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute; and Sagan\u2019s daughter, Sasha Sagan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cornell faculty members, graduate students, and postdocs\u2014among CSI fellows spanning more than 15 departments\u2014discussed ongoing efforts to detect life elsewhere in the solar system and on exoplanets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carl Sagan inspired countless people worldwide as he shared the wonder of the cosmos, and I know he would appreciate the view that I have from this place.<\/p>\nAstronaut Don Pettit<\/strong>, from the International Space Station<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Lisa Kaltenegger<\/a>, CSI director and associate professor of astronomy, shared that more than 5,700 planets circling other stars have been identified to date and another 10,000 candidates are being vetted. The numbers suggest every second star has a planet and every fifth star has one that might support liquid water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With 200 billion stars in the Milky Way alone, that means \u201cbillions and billions\u201d of possibilities for life, Kaltenegger said, echoing a famous Sagan phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is incredibly hard, even with the biggest telescope,\u201d said Kaltenegger. \u201cBut for the first time, the search has changed from impossible to possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attendees also included Syracuse-area residents Paul Erickson \u201909, BS \u201910, and his wife and their two young sons\u2014the eldest named for Sagan. Paul said the astronomer\u2019s teaching and outreach had a profound impact at a challenging time in his youth, helping him to go from high school dropout to Cornell graduate, and later a Cornell lecturer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program closed with a recording of Sagan reading his \u201cPale Blue Dot\u201d poem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLook again at that dot,\u201d it begins. \u201cThat\u2019s here. That\u2019s home. That\u2019s us. On it, everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives \u2026 on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
