If so, here\u2019s hoping it didn\u2019t orbisculate on you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cOrbisculate\u201d? What does that mean?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glad you asked!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neil Krieger \u201962 coined the term during a freshman writing seminar more than six decades ago, when he was assigned to invent an English word. He came up with the verb \u201corbisculate,\u201d defined as accidentally squeezing citrus juice into your eye. (The word can also be adapted to other parts of speech, like the noun \u201corbisculation\u201d and the past tense \u201corbisculated.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Krieger, an avid grapefruit eater, kept using orbisculate throughout his life\u2014and with such deadpan wit that his two kids always assumed it was a veritable word. Hilary and her brother <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tAa8l8A26ME\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">appeared on \u201cThe Ellen Show,\u201d<\/a> where host Ellen DeGeneres recruited several celebrities\u2014such as comedian Sarah Silverman and chef Jos\u00e9 Andr\u00e9s\u2014to contribute to the cause by using orbisculate on air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Sharing our story and letting people know what an amazing person our dad was has been an amazing boost for us during a really dark time.<\/p><cite><strong>Hilary Krieger \u201998<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the biggest accomplishments is the incredible way that our story has touched people, and the way those people have touched us,\u201d says Hilary, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/think\/opinion\/coronavirus-death-toll-tops-100-000-america-my-father-one-ncna1215751\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">journalist with NBC News<\/a> who served as editor-in-chief of the <em>Daily Sun<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLosing a parent under any circumstances is terrible, but for it to happen during COVID made it so much worse. Paul Marantz \u201962 not only attended high school with Neil\u2014and, like him, went on to earn a doctorate from Harvard\u2014but was his freshman roommate and had the same word-invention assignment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI came up with something which was so unimaginative, it was forgotten,\u201d Marantz says with a laugh. \u201cBut the nice thing about Neil\u2019s word is that it has lived on.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A professor emeritus of political science at the University of British Columbia, Marantz has struck a small blow for orbisculate: he taught his computer\u2019s spell checker to accept it as valid. \u201cThe word doesn&#8217;t sound made up; it seems to make a lot of sense,\u201d Marantz observes, noting that \u201corb\u201d evokes the eye. \u201cAnd it fills a gap in the English language. I think the campaign is a fitting tribute to Neil and a great way of remembering him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, the effort (dubbed \u201cOrbisculation Nation\u201d) has made significant strides. The word has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=Orbisculate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">added to Urban Dictionary<\/a>\u2014admittedly, not a terribly tough task\u2014and according to Hilary, Merriam-Webster has opened a file on it, a key step toward potential inclusion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fair number of the goals have been achieved\u2014including having the word used in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CVq8b_Grbqz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">proclamation by the city of Citrus Heights, CA<\/a>, which happened in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I think the campaign is a fitting tribute to Neil and a great way of remembering him.<\/p><cite><strong>Paul Marantz \u201962<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Orbisculation Nation campaign also has a fundraising aim: sales of branded merchandise, such as T-shirts and drinking glasses, benefit <a href=\"https:\/\/carsonsvillage.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carson\u2019s Village<\/a>, a charity that provides bereavement support and helps families cope with logistics in the aftermath of a sudden death. Some $20,000 has been raised so far, including $5,000 donated by a sponsor as part of the \u201cEllen\u201d appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think we&#8217;ve been pretty successful\u2014it has exceeded our wildest dreams about the interest we\u2019d get,\u201d Hilary says of the campaign. \u201cWe&#8217;ve heard from thousands of people around the world who now know this word and are using it. Hopefully, one day it will be enough for the dictionary editors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And what does she think her dad would say about all this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s funny\u2014he was definitely not a person who looked for the spotlight,\u201d she says. \u201cHe\u2019d always say, \u2018I&#8217;m just a humble biochemist.\u2019 So I think he\u2019d find it humorous, or perplexing.
