Duke was passing through the atrium after class when she stopped to join the group of happy people (and equally happy dogs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis was such a pleasant surprise,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m in no rush to move from this spot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more than a quarter-century, Cornell Companions has organized campus and community outings featuring well-behaved pets and and facilities for children and adults with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently boasting more than 60 owner-pet teams\u2014mainly dogs, but also a cat, two llamas, a goat, a cockatoo, and even an around campus with their Companions pets in training\u2014helping to socialize the animals and get them accustomed to stimuli by going onto the quads, into buildings, on and off elevators, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(This can sometimes resulting in the head-turning sight of a leashed llama strolling down Tower Road.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe animals really meet people where they are,\u201d says local resident Karen Howarth, Piper\u2019s owner. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing the impact they have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The animals really meet people where they are. the dogs by name\u2014particularly Gus, a three-year-old golden retriever belonging to the group\u2019s director, Janet Gray \u201988.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHis favorite thing in the world is getting attention,\u201d Gray, a University retiree and CALS alum who runs her own boarding kennel, says as she watches a (seemingly) grinning Gus surrounded by a throng of eager petters.<\/p>\n\n\n<div Jennifer Matlow, DVM \u201900, then a second-year vet student. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: revert\">She was inspired, in part, by a TV show about prison inmates who train a black Lab and coonhound mix\u2014who\u2019d visit schools, hospitals, and senior living facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost veterinary students show up to school with at least one dog in tow,\u201d says Matlow, now a board-certified veterinary pathologist in Michigan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo we have a large mass of dogs that are generally friendly and trained, and owners who know that they can help people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group has since grown not only larger (and with a diversity of species), but has branched out to owner describes him as a \u201cgentle giant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to volunteering with Companions, retired Cornell vet Richard Hackett takes Doyle (also a canine blood donor) to a weekly event at the local library where kids read stories to four-legged listeners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany dogs enjoy the activities, too,\u201d Hackett says. \u201cDoyle likes having people come over and interact with him.
