Cornellians flocked to the Hill for the annual Big Red celebration\u2014made even more festive by a big win (and a tiny horse)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may not have been the most delightful weather in Homecoming history\u2014but it was an amazing day for Big Red spirit, with throngs of happy Cornellians and a decisive win for the home team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late September, alumni and students had a ball during Homecoming weekend\u2014from fireworks over Schoellkopf Crescent to a fun-filled festival in the nearby parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n

Despite the precipitation occasionally dampening both players and fans, Big Red football notched a crowd-pleasing victory, beating Yale<\/a>\u2014the reigning Ivy champs\u2014by a whopping 47-23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weekend\u2019s major events kicked off on Friday night, when fans packed the Crescent for the popular fireworks and laser light show, complete with a DJ and a preshow trivia quiz by Big Red history expert (and Cornellians<\/em> contributing editor) Corey Ryan Earle \u201907<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Answer: a book and a football.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday\u2019s overcast skies couldn\u2019t dampen the enthusiasm of the many alums and students firing up BBQ grills and digging into tailgate feasts\u2014as well as enjoying the many pleasures of the traditional Fan Festival.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They included free food (apple crisp, donuts, salt potatoes, and more); photo ops with Vet College ambassador and East Hill celebrity Minnie the miniature horse<\/a>; classic tunes by the Big Red Marching Band<\/a> (including some alumni Bandies); performances by student dancers and musicians; and games like cornhole and giant Jenga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And of course, there were booths where various Big Red organizations offered free merch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday\u2019s overcast skies couldn\u2019t dampen the enthusiasm of the alums and students firing up BBQ grills and digging into tailgate feasts.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Once again\u2014we humbly report\u2014Cornellians<\/em> boasted some of the event\u2019s hottest swag: red umbrellas emblazoned with our masthead and the definition of the hyperlocal weather phenomenon known as \u201cIthacation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(On that gray, drizzly Saturday, recipients wondering about the origin of the term needed only to look up.)<\/p>\n\n\n

To earn an umbrella\u2014and we gave away 700 of them!\u2014alums and students participated in our annual Homecoming exercise, in which we collect answers to a prompt and post them in our booth on brightly colored sticky notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s, titled \u201cHome Sweet Home,\u201d asked the question: \u201cWhat\u2019s your fondest Cornell memory?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
