{"id":41402,"date":"2024-09-27T11:40:37","date_gmt":"2024-09-27T15:40:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=41402"},"modified":"2024-09-27T12:05:22","modified_gmt":"2024-09-27T16:05:22","slug":"shoals-marine-lab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/shoals-marine-lab\/","title":{"rendered":"By the Deep Blue Sea, an Idyllic Spot for Teaching and Research"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">For more than half a century, students and faculty\u2014from Cornell and elsewhere\u2014have flocked to Shoals Marine Lab<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Melissa Newcomb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Each summer, Douglas Fudge \u201991, MAT \u201992, steps off the boat at Maine\u2019s Appledore Island. He pauses, inhales the salt air, and absorbs the picturesque view: lush greenery surrounded by rocky coastline and tide pools teeming with marine life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cI love that first step onto the dock every year,\u201d says Fudge, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/douglas-fudge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">biology professor<\/a> at Chapman University in California. \u201cI stop to take it all in. It just feels like home to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appledore is home to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shoalsmarinelaboratory.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shoals Marine Laboratory<\/a>, a seasonal field station\u2014run jointly by Cornell and the University of New Hampshire\u2014that offers myriad learning and research opportunities for high school and college students, interns, academic faculty, and the broader scientific community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fudge first visited in 1991 to take a class as part of his studies in science education. You come here and find a community unlike any other that I\u2019ve experienced.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the summer, Shoals typically hosts 80\u2013100 people at any given time. More than half are students taking two-week classes in topics like shark biology and conservation, sustainable fisheries, field ornithology, and investigative marine biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>You come here and find a community unlike any other that I\u2019ve experienced.<\/p>\n<cite>Executive director <strong>Sara Morris, PhD \u201996<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>(The island also hosts short courses that are open to the public and welcomes a limited number of day-trippers, who visit for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shoalsmarinelaboratory.org\/public-programs\/celia-thaxters-garden-tours\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">organized tours<\/a> of the restored gardens originally created by prominent New England poet Celia Thaxter, a 19th-century resident of Appledore.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some 200 students come to Shoals each year\u2014roughly 70% of them receiving scholarships to attend. Each course, which packs a semester of work into an intensive two weeks, offers three academic credits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure researchers are in residence each summer to conduct an independent 10-week project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI knew I wanted to come to Shoals before I even applied to Cornell,\u201d says CALS student Ondine Morgan-Knapp \u201926. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat has been really striking to me is the level of genuine interest and involvement from everybody on the island.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An Ithaca native studying marine biology and data science on the Hill, Morgan-Knapp conducted research at Shoals in summer 2024 as part of her work to develop more sustainable bait for lobster fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She spent the season field testing a formula she\u2019d developed the previous academic year for (as she calls it) a \u201cfish muffin\u201d: bait primarily made of ground carcasses that are byproducts of haddock processing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" Evenings include after-dinner chats, board games, and cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are weekly lectures known as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shoalsmarinelaboratory.org\/public-programs\/rock-talk-seminar-series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rock talks<\/a>\u201d; the name is a throwback to the days class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>More than a half century ago, Kingsbury\u2014who wrote a seminal textbook on poisonous plants and taught on the Hill for three decades\u2014envisioned Shoals as the vibrant hub for research and education that it is today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to his dogged efforts at fundraising and navigating approvals by regulators and the University, Shoals started as a summer course on neighboring Star Island in 1966\u2014and two years later, the plan to build a lab on Appledore got the go-ahead from Cornell trustees.
