I\u2019m interested in turning it upside down. I frequently don\u2019t know what the final form will look like. It evolves over time, as a collaborative process\u2014and that\u2019s how nature operates.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Sabin was recruited to Cornell\u2014from Penn, where she earned a master\u2019s in architecture, taught for six years, and launched her studio and research program\u2014with the express purpose of bringing emerging technologies into the architecture curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of her lab\u2019s first NSF-funded projects looked at structural color\u2014hues created not by pigments or dyes, but by the geometry of the molecules themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something that you see in nature everywhere: the wings of the blue morpho butterfly, hummingbird wings, abalone seashells,\u201d Sabin says. \u201cWe looked at those patterns and textures at a nano scale.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I frequently don\u2019t know what the final form will look like. It evolves over time, as a collaborative process\u2014and that\u2019s how nature operates.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>From that research, Sabin developed high-tech, responsive color-changing fibers with photoluminescent, crystalline structures; they were built on the molecular concepts found in nature, but realized at an architectural scale through a variety of new materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The applied design result of that research was <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2017\/06\/glowing-and-misting-jenny-sabins-lumen-installation-opens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Lumen<\/em><\/a>, a knitted-fiber installation that spanned two courtyards outside MoMa PS1\u2014the Museum of Modern Art\u2019s Long Island City location in Queens\u2014in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With muted hues during the day and an ethereal glow at night,<em> Lumen<\/em>\u2019s vast canopy structure was created out of a million yards of recycled textiles mixed with photoluminescent fibers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/09\/JWP_JennySabin_LumenSelectPs1-9955-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"top view of Jenny Sabin's &quot;Lumen&quot; it also won that year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2017\/02\/jenny-sabins-lumen-wins-moma-ps1-competition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program<\/a> competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, as an artist-in-residence at Microsoft Research\u2019s headquarters in Redmond, WA, Sabin created <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2019\/10\/sabin-installation-microsoft-research-turns-ai-art\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Ada<\/em><\/a>, an artificially intelligent pavilion outfitted with cameras and microphones to interpret visitors\u2019 facial expressions and ambient sounds in order to interact with them through light and color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Video: Cornell\u2019s Jenny Sabin turns AI into art\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vNl_jrv0JNY?feature=oembed&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Knitted cones of fabric connected the egg-shaped pavilion\u2019s soft inner surface to a more rigid outer shell, supporting a framework of 3D-printed nodes, fiberglass rods, and a network of LEDs that could react in real time based on the \u201ccollective sentiment\u201d the AI gathered via cameras and microphones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On campus, her <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2021\/05\/polyform-celebrates-mission-spirit-human-ecology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>PolyForm<\/em><\/a> project\u2014commissioned by Human Ecology and installed outside Martha Van Rensselaer Hall in 2021\u2014took eight years to design and create. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The permanent, square structure includes colorful, wavelength-dependent glass walls and stainless-steel modules that look different depending on the light, time of day, weather, and where a viewer is standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p> <em>PolyForm<\/em> includes colorful glass walls and stainless-steel modules that look different depending on the light, time of day, weather, and where a viewer is standing.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As Sabin observes with a laugh: \u201cI think in some ways, it would have been easier to build a building on campus than this experimental pavilion that\u2019s not quite sculpture, and not quite a building\u2014but you can inhabit it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her bevy of other projects and installations include <em>Purl<\/em>, a canopy structure that offers shade to beachgoers in Abu Dhabi; Sabin\u2019s process and vision behind the whole thing are fascinating,\u201d <em>Architectural Digest<\/em> raved about a 2018 project mounted in NYC\u2019s West Village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Luster<\/em> is more than just a work of art; it\u2019s a collaborative effort between a couple of different disciplines that collectively allow the visitor to envision a sustainable future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sabin\u2019s many accolades include a Pew Fellowship in the Arts and the Architectural League Prize for Young Architects; their backgrounds include \u201ceverything from evolutionary biology to human-computer interaction, architecture, industrial design, and biology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among her lab\u2019s ongoing projects is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sabinlab.com\/polybrick-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PolyBrick<\/a>, which takes inspiration from the biological structure of bone, which is porous rather than solid. In collaboration with a mechanical engineer, Sabin aims to produce ceramic building blocks that can carry higher loads due to\u2014rather than in spite of\u2014their porous structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Video: \u2018ChromaFold\u2019: A Closer Look\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Aexu98AQTHQ?feature=oembed&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Commissioned by the Ontario Science Centre in 2023, <em>ChromaFold<\/em> includes colorful geometric elements that transform.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been looking at the paradox of building with holes, which you see everywhere in nature,\u201d she says. \u201cIt is so extremely lightweight, but very robust.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other recent and ongoing research includes the NSF-funded HelioSkin, in which Sabin and her team are studying kirigami geometry and the mechanics of diurnal heliotropism\u2014the ability of certain plant species to turn their buds, leaves, and other structures to follow the movement of the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From that research, she and her team are creating next-generation solar collectors\u2014which would be \u201cskins\u201d rather than panels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe grand vision,\u201d she explains, \u201cis to develop a building wrapper that can adapt and morph to multiple architectural forms and types\u2014from a backyard canopy to a skyscraper.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Top: Visitors explore <\/em>Lumen<em> at MoMA PS1 in 2017.
