She arrived late in the day, and tried to unpack everything and set up her room before her parents had to leave. She found her name on the door, a welcoming suite, and lots of storage space. \u201cIt was so much bigger than I thought,\u201d says Rodriguez, a Massachusetts native and Engineering student. \u201cIt looked brand new and absolutely perfect. Following debate, proposals, and committee reports, in October 1997 he released a comprehensive plan that would require first-years to reside on North Campus, whether in residence halls, program houses, cooperatives, or other affiliated housing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New residential space would be built; at the same time, renovations and construction on West Campus would demolish the aging and much-maligned U-Halls to make room for living-learning residential colleges and upgrades to existing buildings for upperclassmen and transfer students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cI am committed to preserving, to the extent feasible, the freedom of choice that has been and continues to be important to students at Cornell,\u201d Rawlings said of the plan, \u201cwhile also moving decisively to provide a unifying educational experience that will introduce new students to the breadth of the intellectual environment at Cornell and that will enable students to experience the full diversity of the freshman class.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignfull is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Video: Cornellians: North Campus Residential Expansion\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5RWcyeUfLLQ?feature=oembed&#038;controls=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>By fall 2022, when the <a href=\"https:\/\/ncre.cornell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Campus Residential Expansion<\/a> (NCRE) is complete, that bold vision will have come to fruition. Counting Morrison and Gan\u0119dag\u01eb:, five new residence halls\u2014including three still under construction, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/I72KplVoHLc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">named in honor of other distinguished alumni<\/a> (see box below)\u2014will be open. That will allow the University to house not only all first-years on North Campus, but all sophomores on campus or in University-affiliated housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Note: Toni Morrison Hall is not to be confused with the Vet College&#8217;s Morrison Hall, named for animal husbandry professor Frank Morrison.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The expansion is the largest construction project in Cornell history, totaling 760,000 square feet. The architecture, the floor plans, and even the flow of ambient noise guide the use of different parts of the buildings, enhancing the likelihood of interactions and collaborations among students and reinforcing a sense of community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First- and second-floor common spaces, facilities, study areas, and meeting rooms are open to all on campus; keycard access for residents is required on the upper floors. In Morrison, small signs sporting a serious-looking photo of the building\u2019s namesake\u2014the beloved, much-acclaimed author\u2014remind residents of designated quiet hours for reading, writing, and studying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I never feel secluded and isolated. Even though most people are in single rooms, you are always interacting with them.<\/p><cite><strong>Anannyabrata Mandal \u201925<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Anannyabrata Mandal \u201925 is an international student who moved into Gan\u0119dag\u01eb: in August; he says that although the dorm is quite large, with ample privacy, \u201cI never feel secluded and isolated. When the remaining halls open in fall 2022, they will house first-year students in more traditional double rooms, and Morrision and Gan\u0119dag\u01eb: will be home to sophomores. Additionally, this year Morrison is the temporary home for the all-female community normally housed in Balch, which is closed for renovations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mandal, who serves on the Gan\u0119dag\u01eb: council board, notes that as inaugural residents, there\u2019s an additional sense of excitement for him and many of his peers. \u201cWe\u2019re taking the first step,\u201d he says, \u201cand there is this kind of venturing into the unknown\u2014even though it\u2019s a good kind of unknown\u2014by setting the traditions and culture that will be here for the following few years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Gan\u0119dag\u01eb:, Mandal adds, he has encountered students with a wide variety of hobbies, backgrounds, and academic interests. \u201cWithin my suite, I have people from three other colleges,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s pretty diverse, but at the same time everyone is open and caring. I\u2019ve been able to make friends with people in other suites and hang out with them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While that sort of interaction may be true of most dorms, the design of Gan\u0119dag\u01eb: \u201chelps boost this interaction and mingling between students,\u201d Mandal says\u2014and has regularly drawn him to central common areas when he might otherwise have stayed in his room or gone to a smaller study area nearby. \u201cI feel much freer engaging with my peers there, whether it\u2019s collaborating with them or working on other projects,\u201d he says. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t feel like a chore\u2014it feels like teamwork.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rodriguez agrees about the welcoming atmosphere, going on to note that Morrison has become a study spot that appeals to a wide swath of first-years. \u201cOn nights before big prelims or exams, there will be a lot of people studying for the same test,\u201d she says. \u201cThere will be people asking questions, and someone else at a different table will be answering it. It ends up being a nice community of people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-style-default is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-link has-cornell-neutral-1-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-heading\"><strong>North Campus Honorees: A Closer Look<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The new residence halls (two now open and three currently under construction and slated to open in fall 2022) are named after distinguished alumni\u2014and an Indigenous nation<\/em>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\"><strong>Ruth Bader Ginsburg \u201954<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The late Supreme Court Justice helped transform American society, from her founding of the ACLU&#8217;s Women\u2019s Rights Project in 1972 to her long legal career on the bench\u2014protecting equality and human dignity and advancing of the rights of all Americans, particularly women. They include <em>Beloved<\/em>, which won the Pulitzer Prize, and <em>Song of Solomon<\/em>, winner of a National Book Critics Circle Award. In 1993, she became the first Black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. She was an A.D. On the Hill, he helped start what became one of the best collections of East Asia materials in the country. Gan\u0119dag\u01eb: is the ancestral name for the Ithaca area, located on the homeland of the Gayogo\u0331h\u00f3\ua789n\u01eb\u0241\u2014members of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, an alliance of six nations whose presence predates Cornell\u2019s founding and continues today.
