from landscapes\u2014and memories<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Joe Wilensky<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">When Daniel Ambrosi \u201980, BArch \u201982, MS \u201985, walks along a trail in an Ithaca-area state park with camera in hand, he is seeing these woods on multiple levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is recalling his previous visits to the same place, comparing new reference photos to those he took years ago\u2014and imagining what artificial intelligence will do with his meticulously crafted works once he uploads them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambrosi is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.danielambrosi.com\/Dreamscapes-Portal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">digital artist<\/a> who constructs large-scale, panoramic prints that are enhanced by AI, which adds surprising and seemingly endless details to his creations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resulting works are pictorial feasts that envelop the viewer\u2014comprising anything from complex geometric patterns to the vast array of imagery dreamed up by Ambrosi and his AI partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And \u201cdream\u201d is accurate in more ways than one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only is the dizzyingly complex computer vision program Ambrosi uses a customized version of an open-source technology called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/research.google\/blog\/inceptionism-going-deeper-into-neural-networks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DeepDream<\/a>,\u201d but he also draws on his experiences with psychedelic substances to inform his memories of the natural vistas he photographs and re-creates in pixels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambrosi returned to the Hill this summer for a six-week artist residency in computer graphics, with the aim of creating a new batch of large-scale artworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The residency has been a full-circle experience for Ambrosi, who earned a bachelor\u2019s degree in architecture and a master\u2019s in computer graphics at Cornell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As a student, he was inspired by the region\u2019s natural beauty and worked with professor Don Greenberg \u201955, PhD \u201968, a legendary computer graphics pioneer who became Ambrosi\u2019s mentor (and who is still <a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2022\/10\/88-greenberg-still-cutting-edge-new-course\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">actively teaching<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This summer\u2019s residency reunited Ambrosi with Greenberg, who is providing facilities and computing resources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot many faculty have the opportunity to work with their best technical and innovative students 40 years after they graduate,\u201d Greenberg said at the beginning of the summer, \u201cand I am greatly looking forward to how Daniel is able to merge two separate but related disciplines.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Not many faculty have the opportunity to work with their best technical and innovative students 40 years after they graduate.<\/p>\n<cite>Professor <strong>Don Greenberg \u201955, PhD \u201968<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the residency, Ambrosi has also been collaborating with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engineering.cornell.edu\/faculty-directory\/alex-kwan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Kwan<\/a>, PhD \u201909, a professor in the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering, whose research in psychedelic neuroscience has informed Ambrosi\u2019s approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Kwan notes, psychedelics are now being studied for their therapeutic potential in treating mental illnesses such as depression. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among his lab\u2019s major discoveries in recent years: that a single dose of psilocybin can lead to long-lasting rewiring of neural Daniel\u2019s art,\u201d Kwan says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor example, one of his new pieces was inspired by our psilocybin study; its dream-like imagery includes elements that reach out and make connections, just like neurons.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Ambrosi explains, the customized AI engine he uses is not an image generator\u2014though he has nothing against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div trained on other people\u2019s art,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was part of a computer vision system tasked with image classification. It\u2019s trying to make sense of what it sees. In my case, it\u2019s seeing my photography.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ambrosi adds that one of the remarkable things about his AI partner is that, like humans, it seems to exhibit \u201cpareidolia\u201d\u2014the ability to perceive order in random imagery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we see a rabbit in the clouds, that\u2019s pareidolia at work,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cWhen we dream, we hallucinate, we imagine; we see things that aren\u2019t really there.
