It\u2019s actually a bejeweled bracelet\u2014and Jonathan Tamayo \u201908 earned it in July, when he became the game\u2019s 2024 world champ<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In mid-July 2024, a week or so before the planet turned its attention to the Olympics in Paris, Jonathan Tamayo \u201908 took home the gold. But it wasn\u2019t a gold-plated medal worn around the neck. The Hotelie won a bracelet\u2014one comprising nearly half a kilogram of the precious metal and (among other stones) more than 1,900 diamonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hefty bauble was Tamayo\u2019s trophy for winning the World Series of Poker. And it came on top of the prize money: a cool $10 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Held annually in Las Vegas, the competition drew more than 10,000 hopefuls to its card tables this year. Despite seeing his chip stacks dwindle to perilously low levels on two occasions, Tamayo outlasted his opponents\u2014taking home the top prize after playing for roughly 10 hours a day over the course of 11 days.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cI don\u2019t think I could conceptualize it,\u201d Tamayo says when asked to recall his winning moment. \u201cNow, it\u2019s kind of sunk in\u2014but what\u2019s next? I probably just want to live my life normally. But it\u2019s not going to be normal as much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now based in Houston, Tamayo developed an affinity for poker while in high school. During his years on the Hill, he spent many weekends playing Texas Hold\u2019em<\/a> at an Upstate New York casino\u2014using his winnings to help fund his education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a better income than a lot of other things,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI thought, \u2018Why work a campus job when I can do this?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Tamayo had an offer for a position in the hospitality industry, after graduation he decided to give professional gambling a shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t intend to do it this long\u2014just for a year or two, then see what happens,\u201d says Tamayo, who\u2019s in his late 30s. \u201cAnd now here I am.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what makes a great player? In addition to studying strategy (such as the optimal ways to act on particular hands), Tamayo says, it\u2019s about having a cool head. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA lot of it\u2019s being able to keep your sanity when there are ups and downs,\u201d he says. \u201cIf you\u2019re confident in your process, you\u2019re probably okay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike some players, Tamayo doesn\u2019t have superstitions or pregame rituals\u2014and contrary to the stereotype of the high-living high-roller, his priority in the off hours of a tournament is getting enough sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t operate well mentally unless I get eight to nine hours,\u201d he says. \u201cToward the end [of the championship], I was only getting five; I\u2019d wake up way before my alarm and not be able to go back to sleep, because of the adrenaline.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to his big win, Tamayo\u2019s best showing in the World Series came in 2009, when he finished 21st (and took home $352,000). <\/p>\n\n\n

An unassuming guy by nature, he has found his new fame\u2014and the accompanying barrage of media attention\u2014a little disconcerting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s weird, because I usually try to lay low,\u201d he says. \u201cI equate it to being a D-list celebrity. Only hardcore poker fans would recognize me, which is fine. I\u2019d rather have it that way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, many people who\u2019ve had an eight-figure windfall would be thinking about retiring\u2014but when Tamayo chatted with Cornellians<\/em>, he was about to leave for another tournament in Florida. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plus, he was gearing up for his other passion: refereeing high school football, which he does every fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI could retire\u2014but the problem is, what do you do with your time?\u201d he muses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI need to do<\/em> something. The weird thing now is that my time has become a lot more valuable. So if I want some little conveniences, I don\u2019t feel so guilty anymore. Like, if I need to save 30 minutes, I can order food delivery rather than go pick it up myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither does Tamayo have plans to splurge on any big-ticket toys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not even buying a new car,\u201d he says. \u201cI have a car that\u2019s five or six years old, and it works perfectly fine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
