Update:<\/strong> On August 1, 2024, Michael Grady \u201919<\/strong> and his team won gold in the Olympic men\u2019s four rowing event, crossing the finish line in 5 minutes, 49.03 seconds, beating out New Zealand (5:49.88) and Great Britain (5:52.42); on August 5, Taylor Knibb \u201920<\/strong> and her teammates won silver in the triathlon mixed relay, with Knibb\u2019s anchor leg bringing Team USA up from fifth place (and missing the gold by 1 second in a sprint to the finish); and, on August 10, Kyle Dake \u201913<\/strong> won a bronze medal (his second consecutive Olympic bronze)<\/em> in men\u2019s 74-kilogram freestyle wrestling following a 10-4 victory over Hetik Cabolov of Serbia.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two-time state high school wrestling champion. Four-time NCAA champion. Four-time world champion. Entrepreneur. Husband, father of three, role model. And there\u2019s one more title Kyle Dake \u201913 would love to add to that long list: Olympic champion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, a gold medal won\u2019t be how he measures success when he takes to the mat in Paris at the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad. It\u2019s a lesson that his late father\u2014who was also his wrestling coach at Lansing (NY) High\u2014taught him many years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cIf I can wrestle the way I want to wrestle\u2014score points, compete with courage, be thankful that I have the opportunity to go out there\u2014then everything else will take care of itself,\u201d says Dake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA lot of times people just get focused on the winning, and that can just hold you back. I\u2019m not attached to the outcome. I\u2019m really enjoying the process of getting there, following the path that\u2019s been laid out and just doing it to the best of my ability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dake is one of five Cornellians who will be representing the United States in Paris at the Olympic Games. Other former Big Red student-athletes who\u2019ll compete include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael Grady \u201919:<\/strong> men\u2019s four rowing (competing in his second Olympics);<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taylor Knibb \u201920:<\/strong> women\u2019s triathlon and cycling individual time trial (second Olympics);<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sorin Koszyk \u201920:<\/strong> men\u2019s double sculls rowing (first Olympics); and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rudy Winkler \u201917: <\/strong>men\u2019s hammer throw, track and field (third Olympics).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cornell athletes have won 63 Olympic medals, including 45 in the Summer Games (20 gold, 16 silver, nine bronze), since Lesley Ashburner 1906 won bronze in the men\u2019s 110-meter hurdles in St. Louis in 1904.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dake\u2014a four-time Academic All-American on the Hill and the only wrestler in NCAA history to win four national titles in four different weight classes\u2014will be looking to add to the bronze medal he won in the 2020 Games in Tokyo, which were delayed until 2021 due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grady will also be making a return trip to the Games, after his men\u2019s four crew placed fifth in 2021 in Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo go to my second Olympics, especially with the first one being the COVID Olympics, is going to be a completely different experience,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knibb will be making some Cornell history when she lines up for the start of the women\u2019s cycling individual time trial. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having also qualified in her specialty, the triathlon, she\u2019s the first Cornellian to compete in multiple sports at the same Olympics since 1908, when Lee Talbott 1911 (tug-of-war, wrestling, and track and field) represented the U.S. in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knibb was a three-sport athlete at Cornell (cross country, track and field, and swimming). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In Tokyo three years ago, she won a silver medal in the triathlon mixed relay and placed 16th in the women\u2019s triathlon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like Dake, the result won\u2019t be Knibb\u2019s sole measure of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s both the journey and how you get there,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you can line up and say, \u2018I\u2019ve done everything I can to be prepared, and regardless of what happens, I\u2019m very satisfied with that,\u2019 then I think that\u2019s a win in and of itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Koszyk was a two-time national champion at Cornell as a member of the varsity lightweight eight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to competing, Koszyk says he\u2019s also looking forward to being in the Olympic Village and soaking in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it\u2019ll be good just to get the whole experience, being in the village and getting to see all the other athletes,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think you definitely will feel more like you\u2019re part of Team USA when you\u2019re actually over there with the rest of the athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winkler\u2014who was a three-time first-team All-American on the Hill\u2014is the American record holder in the hammer throw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He earned his third trip to the Olympics by finishing second at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. His training had been slowed in the early spring by a nagging hip injury, and he says he\u2019d been pain-free for only about two weeks before the trials. <\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cI have so much more in the tank in terms of distance,\u201d he says, \u201cand I\u2019m just going to keep climbing from here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
