Now on her third Olympics, Jeanne Douglass Diaz \u201910 is one of the creative minds behind the women\u2019s patriotic, blinged-out uniforms<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was as though a very merry Christmas\u2014or perhaps un tr\u00e8s<\/em> joyeux No\u00ebl<\/em>\u2014had come in July. With the image of a glittering Eiffel Tower as their backdrop, seven young women stand behind a line of festive red boxes, whose tags declare that their contents were \u201cmade exclusively for\u201d each one of them by name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In unison, they pull open the gold-ribboned closures\u2014and their faces light up. Inside each box is a set of eight uniforms\u2014shimmering in various combinations of red, white, and blue\u2014that these elite gymnasts will wear to represent Team USA at this summer\u2019s Olympic Games in Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m obsessed with the stars and the patriotism,\u201d marvels four-time gold medalist Simone Biles, amid her teammates\u2019 happy shrieks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later broadcast on the “Today” show<\/a>, the unboxing was an unforgettable moment for the gymnasts\u2014and also for Jeanne Douglass Diaz \u201910.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the design director for GK Elite Sportswear<\/a>, the Human Ecology alum spearheaded creation of the uniforms\u2014arguably the most prominent such gig in the athletic world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After all, women\u2019s gymnastics is the most popular sport at any summer Olympics. This one will be held in the global capital of haute couture<\/em>\u2014where all eyes will be on superstar Biles and her teammates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor a designer, it\u2019s a dream,\u201d says Diaz. \u201cThis was such a great opportunity to showcase our range. How do we merge two things\u2014Parisian fashion and iconic Americana\u2014that are so different? I think we did a great job mixing the two themes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the uniforms were revealed in mid-July, they quickly made headlines for their eye-popping luminescence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each of the eight designs features thousands of tiny, glittering Swarovski crystals; the one for the team final, dubbed \u201cGo for Glory,\u201d bears a whopping 9,929.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Diaz explains, the crystals are placed via computer-aided design\u2014and for the record, each athlete will sport a cumulative total of around 47,000 of the tiny baubles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given that the wearers will be defying gravity on the world stage, durability is essential: the crystals are firmly attached to the fabric through a proprietary process that involves adhesive sheets, heat, and pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, Diaz notes, the bling has become something of a Team USA signature, having adorned its uniforms since debuting (on a much smaller scale) at the 2000 Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs the Olympic cycles have gone on, we\u2019ve upped the crystal usage, because it gives us another design element,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s really only so much you can do with the silhouette itself. The leotard is always going to have sleeves; it\u2019s not going to have legs; you won\u2019t have other pieces coming off it, because that would hinder performance. At the end of the day, it\u2019s a functional garment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An aspiring clothing designer since childhood, Diaz majored in textiles and apparel on the Hill\u2014where, she says, she was particularly grateful for her professors\u2019 emphasis on function as well as form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her junior year, she studied abroad in Florence, Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diaz was active in the Cornell Fashion Collective<\/a> and had her designs featured at its annual runway show her senior year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(That collection, titled \u201cVixen,\u201d was inspired in part by Victoria\u2019s Secret lingerie and the musical Cabaret; <\/em>it was, she recalls with a laugh, \u201ca little risqu\u00e9.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diaz was hired by the Pennsylvania-based GK Elite right out of college, rose to design director in July 2023, and now has three Olympics to her credit, having also worked on the Rio and Tokyo Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to supplying the U.S. women\u2019s uniforms, the company outfits the men\u2019s team as well as the gymnasts of other nations including Australia, Canada, Mexico, and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yes: she\u2019ll be attending the Games in Paris\u2014mainly for the delight of seeing her designs in action, but equipped with spare leotards and extra crystals in case of emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

So how will she and her team outdo this year\u2019s uniforms at the 2028 Games in L.A.?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe thought of that is a little bit overwhelming,\u201d Diaz admits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut once we get to celebrate what we\u2019ve done, and give ourselves a little time, I think we\u2019ll be able to top ourselves in four years. As a designer, your brain never really turns off. So whether or not I realize it, the next Olympics are somewhere in my brain, being designed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
