family,\u201d observes <em>Kirkus<\/em>, \u201cFauci confines himself to his professional life, delivering an illuminating, expert account of our government\u2019s encounters with infectious diseases over the past 50 years\u2014stories that involve as much politics as science.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/743358\/on-call-by-anthony-fauci-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">much-anticipated memoir<\/a>, the famed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaid.nih.gov\/about\/anthony-s-fauci-md-bio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">physician and public health leader<\/a> looks back on his life and long career\u2014from his Brooklyn childhood to medical school at Cornell to his nearly four decades as director of the NIH\u2019s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There, he led the U.S. response to outbreaks from Zika to COVID\u2014and, during the latter, became a political lightning rod for opponents of pandemic-driven mask mandates and restrictions on public gatherings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cIf Fauci\u2019s childhood reminiscences can be stiff and dutiful,\u201d says the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, \u201chis accounts of the health emergencies he weathered as a public servant\u2014particularly the AIDS epidemic\u2014are gripping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One of Our Kind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nicola Yoon \u201994<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yoon is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicolayoon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bestselling author<\/a> of young adult fiction who has had two books adapted to the screen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, she switches to the adult genre in what <em>Publishers Weekly<\/em> calls a \u201cmasterful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/721783\/one-of-our-kind-by-nicola-yoon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">psychological horror novel<\/a> [that] brings to bear all the claustrophobia of <em>Rosemary\u2019s Baby<\/em> and <em>The Stepford Wives<\/em> against the backdrop of systemic racism and police brutality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her protagonist\u2014a woman named Jasmyn who is expecting her second child\u2014moves with her family to Liberty, an affluent all-Black community in California. <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"755\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/07\/yoon-one-of-our-kind-A.jpg\" alt=\"The cover of &quot;One of Our Kind&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-37587 \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Jasmyn is in many ways relieved to be in a place devoid of societal racism, she has a creeping sense of unease about how Liberty\u2019s residents seem to lose touch with their Black identity\u2014particularly after spa treatments at the wellness center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe affection and care [Yoon] has for all her characters and the reasons that have taken them to Liberty deepen the novel\u2019s stakes and heighten its terror,\u201d says the <em>New York Times<\/em>. \u201cYoon also reminds us, through Jasmyn\u2019s friendships and her relationship with her husband, King, of the richness and intimacy of Black culture, and underlines how much more we are than our trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Rock of Arles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Richard Klein \u201962<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Klein made a splash with his 1993 book <em>Cigarettes Are Sublime<\/em>, in which he contemplated the attractions and cultural cachet of smoking while trying to kick the habit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, the <a href=\"https:\/\/romancestudies.cornell.edu\/richard-klein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">professor emeritus<\/a> of French literature has again teamed up with Duke University Press on an iconoclastic volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is likely the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukeupress.edu\/the-rock-of-arles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first book<\/a> authored by a geological formation, in this case by the plateau of limestone on which the French city of Arles stands,\u201d notes <em>Kirkus<\/em>. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat, at least, is the explanation put forward by Klein \u2026 who jokingly claims that the Rock narrated the story of the town\u2019s history to him\u2014in French, which the author then transcribed and translated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the publisher explains, that limestone slab \u201cinfallibly remembers every moment of its existence, from the Roman conquest of Gaul to the fall of feudal aristocracy, from the domination of the Catholic Church to the present French representative democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Klein\u2019s other works include <em>Eat Fat<\/em>, a \u201cpostmodern diet book\u201d in which he contemplates the beauty and value of corpulent bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pet-a-Palooza<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jan Carr \u201975<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jancarr.net\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Human Ecology alum<\/a>, Carr has worked as a Head Start teacher as well as a magazine writer and children\u2019s book editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/737960\/pet-a-palooza-by-jan-carr-illustrated-by-kris-mukai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">illustrated chapter book<\/a> is the third entry in a series\u2014aimed at readers aged five to eight\u2014chronicling life in a second-grade classroom and starring kids named Buddy and Bea. It also features a foreword by the park\u2019s \u201cdark sky ranger\u201d and numerous color photos of the landscape.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As she writes in a poem titled \u201cArena\u201d: <em>\u201cThe sky is out again, galloping on its inherited ribbon. It\u2019s so easy \/ to stand under it: the whole pulse \/ of the world, the dead stars, clouds slinking around, thinking rain, \/ thinking landless, then giving up on that \/ and wandering slow with a thought of tomorrow.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camp\u2019s seven previous poetry collections include <em>Worn Smooth between Devourings<\/em>, <em>An Eye in Each Square<\/em>, and <em>Took House<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Get Over a Breakup<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Michael Fontaine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/classics.cornell.edu\/mike-fontaine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">classics professor<\/a> on the Hill, Fontaine is a <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/fontaine-ancient-wisdom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regular contributor<\/a> to a Princeton University Press series offering ancient wisdom for modern readers.
