Matthew Grear, MHA\u00a0\u201917, not only holds two Guinness records; he also wrote a book on popular pastimes, from bocce to badminton\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matthew Grear, MHA\u00a0\u201917,\u00a0was traveling around Europe in 2013 when he met people in Amsterdam playing a yard game called\u00a0kubb<\/em>, whose objective is to knock down an opponent\u2019s blocks by throwing wooden dowels at them. Grear happily joined in, quickly befriending the players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, on another trip\u2014this time to Peru\u2014he discovered\u00a0sapo<\/em>, in which players try to throw coins into a metal frog\u2019s mouth. Again, Grear gained both new friends and new skills.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those experiences inspired him to become an aficionado of yard games\u2014having, to date, played more than 100 of them around the country and the globe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery culture has games that are specific to them,\u201d observes Grear, who holds a master\u2019s in health administration from Human Ecology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey bring people together. You don\u2019t need to be able to speak someone\u2019s language to play a game and enjoy a moment with them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2021, Grear penned\u00a0The World\u2019s Greatest Backyard Games<\/em><\/a>, in which he compiles his 28 favorites\u2014from bocce to badminton, croquet to cornhole.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cA game\u2019s got to be fun\u2014duh<\/em>,\u201d he says with a laugh. \u201cBut it also can\u2019t have too many rules, or people lose interest. It should be portable, durable, and easy to set up. And you should be able to play it with a drink in one hand.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Among the lesser-known pastimes he profiles: tejo<\/em>, from Colombia, in which players throw a metal disk onto a clay-covered board, aiming to hit targets filled with gunpowder\u2014which explode.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don\u2019t need to be able to speak someone\u2019s language to play a game and enjoy a moment with them.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In addition to being an avid chronicler of yard games, Grear is an adept player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He holds two Guinness World Records in cornhole: for longest backward throw (44 feet, 10 inches), and blindfolded throw (54 feet, 7 inches). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Another record, for longest underhand throw\u201462 feet, 6 inches\u2014has since been broken.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Grear notes, his first time setting up yard games for a crowd was on the Hill, when his grad program hosted a tailgate at Homecoming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI brought cornhole for everybody to play,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI\u2019ll always be the guy bringing the games.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Grear and his then-fianc\u00e9e were looking for a home big enough for his game collection\u2014and outdoor space to play them\u2014they landed on an episode (fittingly titled \u201cGoing Yard in Boston<\/a>\u201d) of the HGTV series \u201cHouse Hunters.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While his day job is in biotech, Grear also runs a Boston-area firm,\u00a0Yard Games World<\/a>, which rents and sells equipment for such games as ladder toss, Kan Jam, giant versions of Jenga and Connect 4, and much more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And he hosts a company\u00a0Instagram account<\/a>\u00a0that has more than 5,500 followers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYard games are an easy way to connect with strangers, break the ice, and spark conversation when you don\u2019t know what to say,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He adds with a laugh: \u201cAt a cookout, it\u2019s also a great way to escape questions from your family member about why you don\u2019t have a girlfriend yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
