series that mines modern wisdom from classical works<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Melissa Newcomb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">When it comes to offering advice to the lovelorn, classics professor <a href=\"https:\/\/classics.cornell.edu\/mike-fontaine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Fontaine<\/a> thinks some of the best wisdom comes from looking back\u2014<em>way<\/em> back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his latest book, <a href=\"https:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/books\/hardcover\/9780691220307\/how-to-get-over-a-breakup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>How to Get Over a Breakup: An Ancient Guide to Moving On<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>Fontaine translates, from the Latin, 2,000-year-old romance tips from the Roman poet Ovid, whose suggestions range from heartfelt to humorous and downright raunchy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Says Fontaine: \u201cThere\u2019s some actionable advice, some stuff that\u2019s questionable, and some stuff that can\u2019t possibly be taken seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of Ovid\u2019s wisdom echoes the common-sense advice you\u2019d get from your besties after a romantic reversal: staying busy, taking up a new hobby, going on vacation, and (in the poet\u2019s words) \u201cminimizing and belittling your ex\u2019s best features.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the most broken-hearted readers, however, will likely decline another of Ovid\u2019s tips: putting your lost love out of your mind by going off to war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOvid is known as the biggest jerk in all of antiquity,\u201d Fontaine says with a laugh. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut he was as clever as anybody who has ever lived, and wrote hilarious poetry.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book is the latest entry\u2014and the fourth by Fontaine\u2014in Princeton University Press\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/series\/ancient-wisdom-for-modern-readers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ancient Wisdom for Modern Readers<\/a>\u201d series, which packages advice from the classical world on a variety of topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With nearly three dozen volumes so far, the series includes such titles (not translated by Fontaine) as <em>How to Make Money<\/em>, <em>How to Eat, How to Do the Right Thing<\/em>, and even <em>How to Stop a Conspiracy<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>There\u2019s some actionable advice, some stuff that\u2019s questionable, and some stuff that can\u2019t possibly be taken seriously.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Fontaine, who\u2019s active in the movement to teach Latin as a living language, previously penned three other books in the series. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>How to Drink: A Classical Guide to the Art of Imbibing<\/em> is translated from works by poet Vincent Obsopoeus, while <em>How to Tell a Joke: An Ancient Guide to the Art of Humor<\/em> and <em>How to Grieve: An Ancient Guide to the Lost Art of Consolation<\/em> both come from Roman statesman and orator Marcus Tullius Cicero. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDeath is a part of the human condition,\u201d Cicero, then mourning the loss of a daughter, writes in the latter. \u201cNothing is more human than death.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fontaine calls the Cicero volume from which the text was drawn \u201cthe world\u2019s first self-help guide\u201d\u2014but in <em>How to Tell a Joke<\/em>, he showcases the orator\u2019s lighter side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cWe need to take stock of the people, the case, and the circumstances,\u201d the ancient Roman advises the aspiring humorist, \u201cso that a joke won\u2019t compromise our authority.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>In <em>How to Tell a Joke<\/em>, Fontaine showcases Cicero\u2019s lighter side. <\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Said a review in the <em>Wall Street Journal <\/em>when the book was published: \u201cIn a loose, one is inclined to say a swinging, translation, Mr. Fontaine makes use of such words as \u2018zingers,\u2019 \u2018badmouthing,\u2019 \u2018shtick,\u2019 and \u2018chutzpah.\u2019 \u2026 To enjoy his translation, one must smother the pedant in oneself and recall that there is no such thing as the perfect translation; only more or less inaccurate ones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fontaine\u2019s first contribution to the series, <em>How to Drink<\/em>, taps Obsopoeus\u2019s first-hand knowledge of such alcohol-fueled activities\u2014familiar even in the ancient world\u2014as competitive consumption, binge drinking, and succumbing to peer pressure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Fontaine explains, Obsopoeus believed that the key to enjoyable imbibing lay in moderation; the text advises how to manage drinking, make friends at gatherings, and give a proper toast, as well as the particular pleasures of drinking at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll avoid a bunch of irritations you have to put up with when you go out drinking: snitting behind your back, obnoxious teasing by some smartass, endless banter from some buffoon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With four books in the \u201cAncient Wisdom\u201d series to his credit, Fontaine has two more in the works. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coming soon: <em>How to Have Willpower: An
