On Roku\u2019s \u2018Dairy Diaries,\u2019 the CALS alums\u00a0teach\u00a0comedian Vanessa Bayer how to milk, drive a tractor, grow feed, and much more<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brothers Tyler Beck \u201914 and Austin Beck \u201918 grew up playing with toy tractors on their living room floor. Now, the two CALS animal science alums run their family\u2019s Upstate New York dairy farm\u2014and it\u2019s being featured in a new TV series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Streaming for free on the Roku Channel, \u201cDairy Diaries<\/a>\u201d follows former \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d star Vanessa Bayer around the brothers\u2019 operation as she spends a week learning what it takes to produce milk, from cow to glass. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI enjoy dairy so much, but I don\u2019t really know how it gets from the farm to me, so I\u2019m excited to get my hands dirty this week,\u201d Bayer tells the brothers on arrival. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd by \u2018get my hands dirty,\u2019 I mean not do any kind of heavy lifting, or touch too much gross stuff\u2014but I would love to just get in there. And by \u2018get in there,\u2019 I mean just walk around and wear a big coat \u2026 but also learn about the process and such.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Replies Austin: \u201cWe\u2019re more hands-on learners, so we\u2019ll show you the manure. It will be good for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sponsored by the dairy industry and shot over the course of a week in November 2023, the show comprises five episodes that are roughly 10 minutes each. In choosing a location for filming, the producers considered more than 80 hopefuls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we applied, we thought, ‘There are so many farms, there\u2019s no way they would choose us,\u2019\u201d Tyler recalls.\u00a0\u201cBut eventually, we had a 50-person production team from Hollywood on our farm\u2014and some of them had never even seen a cow.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The show chronicles the Becks\u2019 efforts to teach Bayer\u2014who\u2019s known for her cheery, wide-eyed, somewhat goofy persona\u2014how to milk, drive a tractor, grow feed such as hay and corn, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are so many steps that go into dairy farming,\u201d Bayer observes at one point, \u201cand let me tell you this: they don\u2019t smell good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had a 50-person production team from Hollywood on our farm\u2014and some of them had never even seen a cow.<\/p>\nTyler Beck \u201914<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In one episode, Bayer even heads to the Hill to learn about sustainability from CALS\u2019 Joe McFadden \u201903<\/a>, an associate professor of dairy cattle biology\u2014who, among other lessons, teaches Bayer that 95% of cows\u2019 methane gas emissions comes via belching (as opposed to, er, the other end). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, two major challenges,\u201d McFadden says on the show. \u201cWe have to make sure that we supply an adequate amount of dairy \u2026 as the world grows in population. But at the same time, we have to be very aware of the impacts it may have on our environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beck Farms<\/a>\u00a0is located in Freeville, about 10 miles northeast of Ithaca. It has some 3,500 cows\u2014including 2,000 in its active milking operation\u2014on 3,800 acres.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

The Becks\u2019 primary business is producing raw milk that\u2019s powdered for eventual use in a variety of consumer products, with clients including Chobani and Nestl\u00e9.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The farm has a rich history, one that\u2019s perfect for TV: it has been owned and operated by four generations of the same family.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in fact, there are Cornellians in each of those generations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to Tyler and Austin, their father (Russell Beck\u00a0\u201985), grandfather (Ronald Beck\u00a0\u201961), and great-grandfather (Martin\u00a0Beck\u00a01920) are CALS alums\u2014and their diplomas are displayed together on one wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the final episode of \u201cDairy Diaries,\u201d Bayer and the brothers gather at their grandparents\u2019 house to talk about how the farm has evolved throughout the decades. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the innovations that the show spotlights: a system that monitors each cow\u2019s health through a small device, affixed to one ear, that tracks their food consumption, digestion, and movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bayer even takes one of the devices\u2014nicknamed \u201ccow Fitbits\u201d after the human activity trackers\u2014for a test drive, running around while wearing it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(She also, at a different point, sings to the bovines.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe did the show because it\u2019s important for us to do our part to bridge the gap between consumers and farmers,\u201d Austin says, noting that he hopes \u201cDairy Diaries\u201d will counter some of the negative PR generated by activists who oppose the milk-production industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOther generations didn\u2019t always prioritize telling their story\u2014but <\/strong>we wanted to have the opportunity to educate and give people a different perspective.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s important to us to do our part to bridge the gap between consumers and farmers.<\/p>\nAustin Beck \u201918<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And while Bayer and her crew got an education about dairy farming, the Becks also learned a bit about how TV shows are made. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe \u2018authentically\u2019 met Vanessa during the first scene,\u201d Tyler says, throwing up air quotes. \u201cThen we immediately shot that introduction scene another six times. You have to work 10 hours a day to make a few minutes of video.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
