After a standout career on the field, Connor Buczek \u201915, MBA \u201917, eschewed Wall Street to remain at his alma mater<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connor Buczek \u201915, MBA \u201917, stepped onto the Big Red lacrosse field for a team workout on a cold, rainy Friday morning in 2009 and thought to himself: This is where I want to be. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fifteen years later, he presides over the same weekly workouts\u2014as the team\u2019s head coach<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the post since 2020\u2014when he was just 26\u2014the former Big Red lacrosse standout has already been named Ivy League Coach of the Year twice (and once got the same nod from the ECAC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy goal is to make sure the guys understand that \u2018challenging\u2019 is good, \u2018tough\u2019 is good, \u2018uncertain\u2019 is good,\u201d says Buczek. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s how you manage those moments and move forward to persevere\u2014whether it\u2019s academically, on the lacrosse field, in your relationships here, or back home.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In spring 2024,\u00a0Buczek\u2019s\u00a0team made it to the Ivy tournament semifinals and finished the season with an impressive 9-5 record; several of his players garnered All-America honors.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cHe is both a coach and a friend,\u201d says one of those, attackman C.J. Kirst \u201924<\/a>, who plans to complete his Cornell degree in spring 2025, having retained athletic eligibility due to COVID-era cancellations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSometimes there can be a disconnect with a coach if they don\u2019t understand the players. But he builds relationships\u2014and knowing what he was able to do in the Cornell jersey, you inherently respect him.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surprisingly, though, a coaching career wasn\u2019t always on Buczek\u2019s radar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduating from CALS with a degree in\u00a0applied economics and management, he served as a volunteer assistant coach while earning his MBA on the Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like many of his business school classmates, he accepted a job on Wall Street\u2014but Buczek changed his mind when he was offered a full-time assistant coaching position for the Big Red. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a big leap of faith at the time,\u201d recalls Buczek, who recently became engaged to fellow lacrosse alum Madeline Kiep \u201916. \u201cBut now in hindsight, I couldn\u2019t imagine myself doing anything else.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an undergrad<\/a>, Buczek was a three-time All-American; set the record as top-scoring midfielder in Cornell history (at 155 points); was named Ivy League Player of the Year in 2014; and won the Ronald P. Lynch Senior Spirit Award, given to student athletes \u201cwhose leadership on and off the field models the ideals of the Big Red athletics department.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buczek also played professionally in the Premier Lacrosse League and was named a league all-star in 2019. That same year, he helped the U.S. win bronze in the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, leading the men\u2019s program on the Hill, Buczek holds an endowed position\u2014as the Richard M. Moran Head Coach\u2014that\u2019s rich with Big Red history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moran led the team for nearly three decades (1969\u201397)\u2014presiding over a golden age of Big Red men\u2019s lacrosse, including all three of its national championships (in 1971, 1976, and 1977).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In hindsight, I couldn\u2019t imagine myself doing anything else.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Moran\u2019s teams competed in the NCAA tournament 14 times, won 15 Ivy championships, and had 11 undefeated Ivy seasons. From 1976\u201378, Cornell won 42 consecutive games, a NCAA Division I lacrosse record. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(It was such a legendary era, in fact, that it inspired a book\u2014We Showed Baltimore: The Lacrosse Revolution of the 1970s and Richie Moran\u2019s Big Red<\/em><\/a>\u2014published in 2022, just weeks before Moran passed away<\/a> at age 85.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under Moran, the Big Red was also a national championship runner-up three times\u2014and in 2022, Buczek\u2019s squad did the same, making it all the way to the tournament\u2019s final game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Buczek is confident that the team can be a contender for a future national title\u2014and his players trust that he\u2019s the one to take them there.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cIf we needed an extra person during practice, he used to play against us; he\u2019s an intense guy, and he would go\u00a0hard<\/em>,\u201d recalls attackman\u00a0Michael Long \u201923<\/a>, who, like Kirst, plans to complete his degree and play for a final season in spring 2025. \u201cHe makes us better players, and better men.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
