Sciences faculty in fall 2024, Shechtman is <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/shechtman-crosswords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a star<\/a> in the world of wordplay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She published her first <em>New York Times<\/em> crossword at age 19; went on to work for the paper\u2019s famed puzzle editor, Will Shortz; and helped launch the current incarnation of crosswords in the <em>New Yorker<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, she has published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/products\/the-riddles-of-the-sphinx-anna-shechtman?variant=41070704099362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">general-audience book<\/a> on crosswords and their feminist history.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In what <em>Kirkus<\/em> praises as \u201ca forthright self-portrait and perceptive cultural critique,\u201d she interweaves the story of women\u2019s contributions to puzzling\u2014from the 1920s \u201ccrossword craze\u201d onward\u2014with a memoir of her own battle with anorexia, during which constructing puzzles offered both a mental respite and a measure of control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo write a good crossword clue\u2014a hard clue, one that frequent solvers will recognize because it\u2019s appended with a question mark, signaling its deception\u2014the puzzle-maker has to loosen a word or phrase from its common set of associations,\u201d Shechtman observes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe has to unsettle its forms\u2014attending to the chance encounters between synonyms and homonyms, idioms and clich\u00e9s\u2014before she can set them down again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Victim<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Andrew Boryga \u201913<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>New York Times<\/em> calls Boryga\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/725334\/victim-by-andrew-boryga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debut novel<\/a>, a literary satire, \u201cenergetic and deeply satisfying.\u201d His protagonist is Javi Perez, a Puerto Rican writer from the Bronx who rises from poverty and family tragedy to a prestigious university and professional success\u2014in large part because of his deft manipulation of how others view him as a victim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That status of victimhood\u2014fueled by Javi\u2019s skill at weaving a convenient and compelling narrative\u2014becomes not only the source of his power, but the crux of a moral quandary and his potential undoing.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/victim-A.jpg\" alt=\"The cover of &quot;Victim&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-35106 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/victim-A.jpg 500w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/victim-A-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/victim-A-263x395.jpg 263w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/victim-A-333x500.jpg 333w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/victim-A-167x250.jpg 167w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/05\/victim-A-83x125.jpg 83w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a thorny and nuanced conversation, but Boryga handles it judiciously,\u201d says the <em>Times<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHis prose is animated and active; his character writing is a crowning achievement. Du Bois Professor in the Humanities<\/a>, was born in Jamaica, and his <a href=\"https:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/books\/9780374610272\/schoolofinstructions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">book-length poem<\/a> draws on his heritage. It highlights the travails of West Indian soldiers serving with the British in the Middle East during World War I, interwoven with the daily life of a schoolboy, named Godspeed, in rural Jamaica in the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2024\/02\/book-length-poem-narrates-struggle-young-black-fighters-wwi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The work<\/a> was short-listed for the T.S. Eliot Prize. But it ultimately failed, costing many account-holders all or most of their funds\u2014and, as the subtitle observes, having a lasting socio-economic impact on Black America.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a sad and devastating end to something that started out with so much hope and promise,\u201d Brooks writes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday economists and historians point to the failure of the Freedman\u2019s Savings Bank as a contributor to this nation\u2019s racial wealth gap, which remains significant and continues to grow.
