From their parents she learned that, due to challenges with sensory input, some kids have difficulty wearing certain kinds of clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those conversations inspired DeNey\u2014then a fashion design major in Human Ecology\u2014to devote a research paper to the clothing options available for children who have sensory issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe conclusion to my essay was: there\u2019s nothing,\u201d DeNey recalls. \u201cThat paper sparked it all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"820\" brand specializing in clothing and accessories that address special sensory needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some items reduce light or sound, while others compress the body or (in the case of a squishable hair scrunchie that doubles as a fidget toy) offer a way to block out other input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cImagine you are at a rock concert, with loud music and bright lights\u2014and then somebody makes you do physics,\u201d says DeNey, whose brand boasts more than 30,000 followers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/senseational_you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on focus. That\u2019s what a classroom can feel like for a kid that has sensory needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>DeNey was a senior on the Hill when she designed the prototype for her first product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A sweatshirt, its hood features a flip-down eye mask and weighted vinyl material around the ears that, she says, can block 10\u201330 decibels of high-frequency sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(The hoodie, priced at $50\u201370, is currently the only item also offered in adult sizes.)<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same year, DeNey designed the forerunner of another of Sense-ational You\u2019s products: a \u201ccompression\u201d shirt ($35) whose adjustable lining can be tightened around the wearer\u2014which, she notes, can have a calming effect on the nervous system by replicating the feeling of a hug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>DeNey&#8217;s brand boasts more than 30,000 followers on Instagram.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>DeNey debuted her sensory-friendly designs\u2014modeled by some of the kids who\u2019d inspired them\u2014during the annual Cornell Fashion Collective Runway Show, which is held in Barton Hall each spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her project was overseen by her mentor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.human.cornell.edu\/people\/hp347\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heeju Park<\/a>, an associate professor of human centered design. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" noreferrer\">Performance Apparel Design Lab<\/a>, contributed his own perspective, having a young relative with autism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Says Park: \u201cJulia has the skills to create this positive Park<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduation, DeNey took a job as a special education paraprofessional and worked on her clothing brand part time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, she recalls, students would ask her to cut the tags out of their shirts because they were uncomfortable\u2014a reminder that her tagless clothing and mindful designs could aid many more children if the brand grew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cThink of an annoying clothing tag on the back of a sweater that cuts into your neck,\u201d she explains. \u201cThat can be bothersome\u2014but to them it is actually painful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, DeNey left her teaching job to pursue Sense-ational You full time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to shirts and hoodies, the site also offers sweatpants with elastic waistbands, avoiding buttons or zippers that could be irritating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Plus, she notes, the simple designs allow kids who have challenges with fine motor skills to dress themselves.)<\/p>\n<\/div><figure from some autism-related social media sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t a doubt in my mind that this company not only knows what they\u2019re doing but genuinely cares about the comfort and well-being of its customers,\u201d blogged the mom of a nonverbal autistic five-year-old. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving put so much love and thought into every step of the process, Sense-ational You
