And for much of the current academic year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mae.cornell.edu\/mae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering<\/a> has been celebrating 150 years of teaching and research in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Sibley students once spent their time grinding ball bearings and improving milling machines, today they work on everything from biomedical devices and cancer research to robotics, fusion reactors, and space exploration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" a panel on the future of space exploration, facility tours, discussions, and appearances by noted alumni\u2014including \u201cScience Guy\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/nye-solar-noon-clock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bill Nye \u201977<\/a>, who will deliver a keynote subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Section Four of the 1865 charter defines the University\u2019s goals, in part, \u201cto teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts, including military tactics, in order to promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the several pursuits and professions in life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Within a decade of the school\u2019s existence, it was churning out nearly 20% of the nation\u2019s newly minted engineers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students were studying engineering and mechanics on the Hill from the very first semester of classes in 1868, though a bachelor\u2019s degree in mechanical engineering wasn\u2019t offered until a few years later. In 1870, Hiram Sibley\u2014one of Ezra\u2019s business partners and a founding investor in the Western Union Telegraph Co.\u2014donated funds to construct a new home for the mechanic arts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That building (today known as West Sibley) stood alone for nearly a quarter of a century; East Sibley was built as its twin in 1894, and in 1902 a dome was constructed, connecting the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\">The first female student enrolled in 1884!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Kate Gleason matriculated into the Class of 1888, though she didn\u2019t complete her degree, returning to Rochester to help run the family business. Still, she eventually became the first woman elected to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (as well as the first female president of a U.S. national bank).<\/p>\n<\/div><figure Gearing\u201d and the \u201cMarie Curie of Machine Tools\u201d\u2014but at Cornell, she was known as \u201cSibley Kate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\">A current prof served as NASA\u2019s chief technologist!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Astronautical engineering professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mae.cornell.edu\/faculty-directory\/mason-peck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mason Peck<\/a> held the post from 2011\u201313, advising the agency\u2019s head administrator on all matters of tech-related strategy, intellectual property, and commercialization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Hill, Peck founded the Space Systems Design Studio and co-hosts a podcast, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzsprout.com\/2277712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spaceflight Mechanics<\/a><\/em>, with mechanical and aerospace engineering professor Elaine Petro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\">It\u2019s So it launched Curtiss Cadettes, which enrolled 918 women in relevant classes at Cornell and six other colleges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solomon Cady Hollister, then dean of engineering, helped design the program for all participants, many of whom went on to work in Curtiss-Wright\u2019s plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity
