And we received dozens of entries\u2014recalling cherished memories, capturing the beauty of campus, and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Across generations, Big Red creativity, humor, and precise wordsmithing were on full display. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mitch Weisberg \u201971, for example, recalled a once-popular (though, it&#8217;s our duty to note, now prohibited) seasonal pastime:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-none\"><em>I hiked up Libe Slope<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-none\"><em>For the joy of tray sliding<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Sat on my tray, WHOOSH!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Katrina Schreiber Firlik \u201991 evoked a small, poignant slice of life:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-none\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-none\"><em>I eat my bagel<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"rkv-gutter-bottom-none\"><em>In the gorge, water rushing<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Then off to bio<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a reminder: the standard form of a haiku\u2014a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/haiku\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">type of poetry<\/a> that dates back to 17th-century Japan\u2014consists of three lines. The Johnson Museum&#8217;s Japanese garden. <em>(Cornell University)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe important ingredients in a haiku,\u201d he says, \u201care simple language, concrete imagery, inner resonance, and insight to natural relationships and experiences so that the reader can arrive at their own haiku \u2018moment of awareness.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there are several styles (with only the traditional requiring the 5-7-5 form), he notes, all haikus should share certain attributes: they\u2019re minimalist, practicing an economy of words; they celebrate simple yet profound relationships, especially involving the natural world; and they create opportunities for new insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Says Clausen: \u201cWith the best haikus, there is room for the reader to have an \u2018a-ha!\u2019 revelation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>With the best haikus, there is room for the reader to have an \u2018a-ha!\u2019 revelation.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Tom Clausen \u201973<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, several entries we received vividly captured the Cornellian experience in ways that will resonate with fellow alums. (\u201c<em>So, not a product \/ Of my own creation, but \/ Nonetheless Haiku.<\/em>\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(The AI-generated verse actually wasn\u2019t bad.
