We asked you to submit verses channeling the Cornell experience\u2014and you delivered, in elegant and evocative fashion<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In honor of National Poetry Month in April, we asked Cornellians to submit original haikus that celebrate the University. And we received dozens of entries\u2014recalling cherished memories, capturing the beauty of campus, and much more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across generations, Big Red creativity, humor, and precise wordsmithing were on full display. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mitch Weisberg \u201971, for example, recalled a once-popular (though, it’s our duty to note, now prohibited) seasonal pastime:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hiked up Libe Slope<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the joy of tray sliding<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sat on my tray, WHOOSH!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Katrina Schreiber Firlik \u201991 evoked a small, poignant slice of life:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I eat my bagel<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the gorge, water rushing<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then off to bio<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a reminder: the standard form of a haiku\u2014a type of poetry<\/a> that dates back to 17th-century Japan\u2014consists of three lines. The first and last line each contain five syllables, while the middle has seven (no rhyming required).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For some expert observations on the form, we consulted Tom Clausen \u201973, who worked at Mann Library for nearly four decades and still curates its Daily Haiku<\/a> webpage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project dates (in paper form) to the late 1980s, when Clausen began posting a new poem each day in the library\u2019s elevator, partly to discourage less \u201csafe for work\u201d graffiti.<\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cThe important ingredients in a haiku,\u201d he says, \u201care simple language, concrete imagery, inner resonance, and insight to natural relationships and experiences so that the reader can arrive at their own haiku \u2018moment of awareness.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While there are several styles (with only the traditional requiring the 5-7-5 form), he notes, all haikus should share certain attributes: they\u2019re minimalist, practicing an economy of words; they celebrate simple yet profound relationships, especially involving the natural world; and they create opportunities for new insights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, several entries we received vividly captured the Cornellian experience in ways that will resonate with fellow alums. From Melinda Dower \u201978:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And some\u2014like this one from Mark Roaquin \u201906\u2014were both achingly relatable and quietly hilarious:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just in time for a meeting<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I forgot my phone<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pete Saunders \u201971, ME \u201972, sent in several haikus he\u2019d whipped up via ChatGPT\u2014but threw in his own poem by way of explanation. (\u201cSo, not a product \/ Of my own creation, but \/ Nonetheless Haiku.<\/em>\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(The AI-generated verse actually wasn\u2019t bad. One example: \u201cIvy veils embrace, \/ Knowledge whispers through the halls, \/ Cornell\u2019s legacy.<\/em>\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
