{"id":32460,"date":"2024-02-28T04:23:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-28T09:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=32460"},"modified":"2024-02-27T16:59:10","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T21:59:10","slug":"miss-rodeo-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/miss-rodeo-america\/","title":{"rendered":"Recent Grad Saddles Up as 2024\u2019s Miss Rodeo America"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">An avid horsewoman, Emma Cameron \u201922, BS \u201921, realized a lifelong dream by winning the coveted Western crown<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By<strong> Beth Saulnier<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Emma Cameron \u201922, BS \u201921, isn\u2019t the first major pageant winner to graduate from Cornell; in recent memory, at least three alumnae have represented their home states in the Miss America competition. She\u2019s always so happy and bubbly, and she has an amazing smile. She could have a positive attitude about almost anything\u2014including our winter weather, which was tough for her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of which: Cameron grew up in New Mexico, and the transition to (often chilly, and even more often gloomy) Upstate New York took some adjustment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of my speeches at the Miss Rodeo America competition was talking about how shocked I was when I moved to Ithaca, because where I grew up, in the high desert, there are 300 days of sunshine,\u201d Cameron says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt rained my entire first week at Cornell\u2014so much that my boot-cut jeans soaked up water to my knees. My first Thanksgiving, my flight home got canceled because there was two feet of snow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>On a horse practically from the time she could walk, Cameron helped out on a nearby ranch and competed in junior rodeo\u2014her main event was barrel racing, in which riders vie for the fastest time around a course demarcated by oil drums\u2014and was crowned Miss National High School Rodeo in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Hill, she was a member of the equestrian team and completed her degree in three years\u2014with an eye, she says, toward gaining the Miss Rodeo America title before she hit job to prepare for the pageant circuit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She won Miss Rodeo New Mexico on her first try, advancing to represent the state at the national competition in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Cameron explains: rodeo pageants resemble conventional ones, like Miss America, in a number of ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide demonstrate poise and stage presence, excel in interviews, perform in group numbers, and model stylish outfits. (Hers included a striking copper-colored metallic dress\u2014which she helped design\u2014for the competition\u2019s \u201cWestern trendy\u201d fashion show.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe big difference for us is that instead of singing or dancing, our talent is horsemanship,\u201d she says. \u201cWe have a whole day dedicated to evaluating how well we can ride a horse, and we have interviews and a written test on equine science, veterinary knowledge, and the overall industry, to make sure we can represent it well.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At the Miss Rodeo America competition\u2014which has been held since 1956\u2014Cameron beat out 30 other young women for the crown and won several awards, including the one for horsemanship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her prizes include scholarships as well as a large wardrobe of Western-style clothing, jewelry, and accessories, which she sports at her many appearances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The highlight, of course, is the elegant Miss Rodeo America crown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No ordinary tiara, it&#8217;s specially designed to slip onto the variously colored cowboy hats that coordinate with her outfits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am essentially the face of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association for the next year,\u201d Cameron says. \u201cIt\u2019s a huge honor, and something I take very seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And once her reign ends?
