{"id":31566,"date":"2024-02-07T12:19:35","date_gmt":"2024-02-07T17:19:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=31566"},"modified":"2024-02-07T16:11:31","modified_gmt":"2024-02-07T21:11:31","slug":"romance-on-the-hill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/romance-on-the-hill\/","title":{"rendered":"From Meet-Cutes to a Single Rose, Alums Recall Romance on the Hill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">For Valentine\u2019s Day, Cornellians from across the decades share their memories of Big Red amour<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Joe Wilensky<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Her first semester on the Hill, CALS student Leah Minemier MacLeod \u201978, MS \u201983, was invited to a fraternity party, where she hung out with a fellow member of the Big Red Band: Don MacLeod \u201977, BS \u201981.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, on Halloween night, there was a knock at her door. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cLo and behold, there was Don and a friend of his,\u201d she recalls. \u201c\u2018Trick or treat,\u2019 they said. I said I didn\u2019t have any treats, and Don said \u2018That\u2019s OK. It was during a party, and I was going up the crowded stairs and he was going down. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Progress was slow, and we stopped for a time on the same step. Drink in hand, he smiled at me and said, \u2018I would tell you my name but you won\u2019t remember it.\u2019 I laughed and said the same thing. It was a brief civil ceremony at the courthouse, and everyone there was in a great mood, smiles everywhere. And lots of other same-sex couples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is our favorite wedding photo (Mark on left, Glen on right). I stuck out my thumb. He stopped. I got in. She did. After I placed the coin in the slot, Anita selected her apple. However, there were still under-the-radar gay spaces\u2014and Alpha Delta Phi\u2019s semi-annual Victory Club party was one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 1984 I went to Victory Club and caught the eye of a handsome guy who I had never seen on campus. It was the beginning of a five-year relationship\u2014my first\u2014and now a lifelong friendship. We\u2019ve been in love ever since. He had just been dropped off to start his sophomore year, and I was walking back from Collegetown. We recognized each other because a mutual friend had previously talked us up to each other; we struck up a conversation, and the rest is history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator aligncenter has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading rkv-gutter-bottom-quarter\">Sheila Moy Saul \u201972<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot romantic, but a fond memory of my brother-in-law, John Beau Saul \u201981, BS \u201997. I was dating his brother, who was in school downstate. I lived in Risley, and Beau (then age 12) would treat me to a meal at Louie\u2019s Lunch truck on a regular basis. We would sit on the grass with our sloppy meatball subs and sodas, eating and talking. We studied at the Law Library, followed by tea in the Ivy Room and a walk back to Dickson V in time for me to make curfew.
