<strong>Lindsay Lennon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">\u201cI didn\u2019t want to come to Cornell and stay in a bubble,\u201d recalls Arts &amp; Sciences alum Fatema Gunja Sumar \u201901. \u201cI really wanted to be part of the community\u2014and there were a lot of ways we could connect our knowledge and shared humanity with Tompkins County.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sumar is just one of numerous Cornellians over the decades who have seen a need in the Ithaca area\u2014and took it upon themselves to fill it by forming a student organization or program to provide a vital service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a sampling of groups and efforts that were launched by undergrads years or even decades ago\u2014and are still going strong today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Translator Interpreter Program (TIP)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Sumar learned through local media that many Ithaca-area residents whose first language was not English were struggling to communicate in emergency situations\u2014particularly those involving interactions with police, firefighters, and medical workers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2000, she worked with Joyce Muchan \u201997 at the Cornell Public Service Center (now the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Feinhorn.cornell.edu%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cess8%40cornell.edu%7Cd0b898182b5b4cee840508dc27415c1f%7C5d7e43661b9b45cf8e79b14b27df46e1%7C0%7C0%7C638428408867310220%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=Pxml43QFtz1mn6hRGUfppWc0jb5kVke3l8fjDPM3hp8%3D&amp;reserved=0\" translators for community agencies and compiled a list of major service organizations\u2014from schools and food pantries to police, fire, and ambulance services\u2014as well as faculty who could certify a student\u2019s fluency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/einhorn.cornell.edu\/opportunity\/translator-interpreter-program-tip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TIP<\/a>, holds the distinction of being the oldest and largest faculty-certified, student-run translation and interpretation program in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Youth Outreach Undergraduates Reshaping Success (YOURS)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div \u201908<\/figcaption><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Jessica Houle \u201908 spent most of her childhood in a mobile home park in Dryden\u2014just miles from the Hill\u2014and vividly remembers feeling shame and embarrassment about it. \u201cI didn\u2019t want my school friends to know where I lived, especially as a teenager,\u201d says Houle. \u201cI felt very judged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While attending Cornell, Houle briefly moved back in with her father to save money. Returning to the environment where she spent 10 years, and seeing the kids who now resided there, flooded her with memories of \u201cnot feeling proud of where I lived.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She sought to change that for the next generation by starting <a href=\"https:\/\/cornell.campusgroups.com\/yours\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YOURS<\/a>, a program providing afterschool programming and mentorship for kids living in Dryden mobile home parks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through a partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County, YOURS offers daily themed programming\u2014like Monday Makers, Tech Tuesday, and Wellness Wednesday\u2014with the goal of inspiring children to develop self-esteem and life skills, become leaders, and pursue their academic and professional goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Encouraging Young Engineers and Scientists (EYES)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>When Jamila Cutliff Hokanson \u201999 noticed how few students of color were majoring in STEM fields on the Hill, she sought to address the issue on a wider scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was probably one of two African Americans in materials science and engineering, and I was curious why there weren\u2019t more,\u201d she recalls. \u201cI was fortunate to grow up in a school system that had a lot of resources, and I wanted to bring that to the schools locally and provide access to exploring engineering concepts and themes in fun, creative ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" \u201913<\/figcaption><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>It\u2019s not uncommon for students to have unused campus dining funds remaining in their Big Red Bucks accounts at the end of each semester. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teaming up with friend Alex Bores \u201913, George Hornedo \u201913 tapped that resource by launching an annual food drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bores and Hornedo devised the drive through <a href=\"https:\/\/einhorn.cornell.edu\/opportunity\/cornell-hunger-relief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cornell Hunger Relief<\/a>, a student-run program that partners with local organizations to address food insecurity in Tompkins County.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It encourages students to use their leftover Bucks to purchase nonperishable goods, which are donated to food drives. The most recent effort, in May 2023, garnered 4,500 pounds of comestibles for local partners focused on food insecurity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t necessarily anticipate that this would be something that would continue,\u201d says Hornedo. \u201cIt\u2019s been incredible to see that it has had a lasting impact\u2014not just on the school, but, more importantly, on the larger community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Top: Jessica Houle \u201908 working with a YOURS participant as an undergrad.
