{"id":31101,"date":"2024-01-19T08:58:56","date_gmt":"2024-01-19T13:58:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=31101"},"modified":"2024-01-23T17:30:51","modified_gmt":"2024-01-23T22:30:51","slug":"watermargin-75th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/watermargin-75th\/","title":{"rendered":"For 75+ Years, Students Have Made Watermargin a Home"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">The pioneering co-op led the way in creating an interracial, interfaith house as a nondiscriminatory ideal<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Joe Wilensky<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">When you enter the <a href=\"https:\/\/scl.cornell.edu\/residential-life\/housing\/campus-housing\/upper-level-undergraduates\/cooperative-housing\/watermargin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Watermargin Co-op<\/a>, you\u2019ll find evidence of three-quarters of a century of cohabitation by people from different backgrounds and traditions. Located at 103 McGraw Place at the edge of West Campus, the house carries the imprint of generations of past residents\u2014from artwork and murals to vintage group photos, eclectic d\u00e9cor, and an ever-evolving collection of books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A plaque in the entryway reads \u201cAll men are brothers \/ All people are family.\u201d It\u2019s accompanied by the Chinese character for \u201cwater,\u201d which also appears above the front entrance of the five-story house, founded in fall 1948 and currently home to 23 residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" resident who has remained involved with the co-op and serves on its board of directors. \u201cThere are various program houses that tend to focus on individual cultures, but Watermargin was always meant to be an intersectional space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watermargin.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The co-op<\/a> is preparing to mark its 75th anniversary later this spring, with <a href=\"https:\/\/watermargin.org\/events\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a reunion<\/a> planned for May 4, 2024 (details are pending). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given that milestone, alumni and current members are looking back at its history and how the house continues to promote its ideals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially dubbed the United World Foundation, Watermargin was conceived by a group of World War II veterans who were attending Cornell under the G.I. The house was reportedly a popular after-concert destination: it held receptions for performers like Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie and their bands, and, in 1969, hosted an infamous afterparty following a Janis Joplin concert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps surprisingly, by the tumultuous late \u201960s and early \u201970s, Watermargin was drawing students who were more artistically inclined than cooking and cleaning responsibilities as well as participate in regular meetings, governance, and other management roles.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Kathy Menton Flaxman \u201971 recalls the house as a center of creativity\u2014for example, a few residents would regularly scour the music library for chamber pieces that had parts to fit whatever assortment of musicians were living there at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember a violin, a cello, a flute, a French horn, the piano,\u201d she says. \u201cThey would sit down and try to bang something out.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After developing a reputation as somewhat of a party house through the \u201970s, Hom says, Watermargin underwent a renaissance in the \u201980s, when \u201cthere was a lot of energy and enthusiasm for reviving the original mission and purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide was by then home to a new generation of program houses and living centers geared toward particular groups and interests, Watermargin offered a contrasting option: bringing students from diverse backgrounds and life experiences together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Says Hom: \u201cWe always liked to point out that at one time, Watermargin was home to the presidents of both the Cornell Democrats <em>and<\/em> the Cornell Republicans.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watermargin is <a href=\"https:\/\/scl.cornell.edu\/residential-life\/housing\/campus-housing\/upper-level-undergraduates\/cooperative-housing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one of eight co-ops<\/a> owned by the University as residential options for students. (Others include 660 Stewart Avenue and Prospect of Whitby.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It seems to me very encouraging that these young people should take such an interest in human rights and freedoms.<\/p>\n<cite>First Lady<strong> Eleanor Roosevelt<\/strong>, in 1948<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In contrast to the \u201crushing\u201d process for Greek organizations, co-ops host a \u201cmosey\u201d as a purposely more low-key alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current house president Shahad Salman \u201924, a global public health sciences major in Human Ecology, lived in a dorm her first year. But she was looking for a smaller community, and a friend told her to check out Watermargin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople have been really great,\u201d she says of the current crop of residents. \u201cThey\u2019re very devoted, caring, and diligent about keeping up with the responsibilities of the co-op.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Archaeology major Remy Kageyama \u201925 notes that just as the house was unique in the \u201940s and \u201950s as an interracial and interfaith residence,<strong> <\/strong>today it\u2019s notable for having many residents who are from under-represented groups, come from low-income households, or are LGBTQ+.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery alignwide speakers have included local farmers and entrepreneurs who provide much of the co-op\u2019s food. Other presentations have come from the residents themselves, who have shared talents and interests including crocheting and birdwatching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI see our home as something that we have to actively make, and create, in the day to day,\u201d says comparative literature major Michelle Wei \u201924. \u201cWe have to be very intentional that there\u2019s this give and take in our living situation, and you have to show up for yourself, and for others, in whatever ways you can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Top: Residents hang out in 1950.
