They include masa doughnuts with Earl Grey glaze (Mexico), <em>frijoles negros<\/em> (Cuba), dry-fried green beans (China), Dungeness crab tinola (the Philippines), and jerk eggplant steaks (Jamaica).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBisseret Martinez\u2019s youthful enthusiasm permeates each page, with her passion for exploring her culinary heritage mixing perfectly with her curiosity for international ingredients and techniques,\u201d says <em>Library Journal<\/em>, adding: \u201cWith enthusiasm and technical skill, Bisseret Martinez reminds cooks to approach food with curiosity and joy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Big Fiction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dan Sinykin, PhD \u201915<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBook lovers curious about how the proverbial sausage gets made will want to check this out,\u201d says <em>Publishers Weekly<\/em> of <a href=\"https:\/\/cup.columbia.edu\/book\/big-fiction\/9780231192958\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this volume<\/a> from Columbia University Press. What would the chain bookbuyers think? Could publicists picture your face on TV, your voice on the radio? Could agents sniff subsidiary rights? \u2026 Would it work in audio? Here, she again tells the <a href=\"https:\/\/mcfarlandbooks.com\/product\/iron-horse-cowgirls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">real-life story<\/a> of a woman in a traditionally male sphere: Louise Scherbyn, who founded the Women\u2019s International Motorcycle Association after learning to ride in the early 1930s\u2014an era when ladies weren\u2019t even supposed to wear pants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis\u2014<em>this<\/em>\u2014is the feeling to remember when others question her, when they try to stop her vocally, forcefully,\u201d says the description of Scherbyn\u2019s first ride.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe will ride hundreds and hundreds of thousands of miles through her lifetime to feel this sense of freedom again and again, this power to cut through where others cannot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Vogl took over the book project from her co-author, a friend who was unable to finish it due to terminal cancer.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cWhat comes through the pages is an engrossing tale of Louise\u2019s challenging of rules, confronting traditions, and protesting ideas about the \u2018fairer sex,\u2019\u201d says a review in the <em>International Journal of Motorcycle Studies<\/em>, adding: \u201cThe authors take great care to pave the road of Louise\u2019s journey, illustrating it through thick description, dynamic narrative, adroit motorcycle discourse, and incredible photographs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Climate Resilience for an Aging Nation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Danielle Arigoni, MRP \u201997<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the dangers of climate change are becoming increasingly well known and well publicized, Arigoni argues in this <a href=\"https:\/\/islandpress.org\/books\/climate-resilience-aging-nation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nonfiction work<\/a> that one aspect is largely ignored by planners and the media: how people are impacted differently based on their age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe reality is that older adults\u2014generally speaking, people over 65\u2014are disproportionately impacted by extreme temperatures, wildfire smoke, flooding and sea level rise, and more frequent and intense hurricanes,\u201d she writes. <\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/Climate-Resilience-for-an-Aging-Nation-A.jpg\" alt=\"The cover of Climate Resilience for an Aging Nation\" class=\"wp-image-31050 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/Climate-Resilience-for-an-Aging-Nation-A.jpg 500w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/Climate-Resilience-for-an-Aging-Nation-A-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/Climate-Resilience-for-an-Aging-Nation-A-263x395.jpg 263w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/Climate-Resilience-for-an-Aging-Nation-A-333x500.jpg 333w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/Climate-Resilience-for-an-Aging-Nation-A-167x250.jpg 167w, https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/Climate-Resilience-for-an-Aging-Nation-A-83x125.jpg 83w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOlder adults represent 80% of the 12,000 people who die each year from heat-related illnesses and are three to four times more likely than younger people to die in climate-fueled disasters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalhousingtrust.org\/who-we-are\/danielle-arigoni\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">managing director<\/a> for policy and solutions at National Housing Trust, Arigoni formerly served as AARP\u2019s director of livable communities and as director of HUD\u2019s Office of Economic Resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cShe spotlights dozens of sensible age-friendly policy ideas for public health, land use, and disaster preparedness,\u201d says a <em>Publishers Weekly<\/em> review, adding: \u201cThis detailed report paints a dire portrait of a vulnerable cohort. Dina Friedman <\/strong><strong>\u201979, BA \u201978<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Friedman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ddinafriedman.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">previous books<\/a> include <em>Escaping Into the Night<\/em>, a young-adult novel about a Jewish girl who flees a Polish ghetto before its residents are deported, hiding in the woods with others who are scrambling to survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creators.com\/books\/immigrants-friedman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collection of 14 short stories<\/a>, the author explores the lives of people\u2014mainly women\u2014of varying backgrounds, many at moments of change or personal crisis. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a character who, seeking a better life for her daughter, sends the girl across the U.S.-Mexico border by herself; another who goes to India on something of a pilgrimage to atone for having accidently killed an Indian-American pedestrian with her car; another who, having been deserted by her husband, is trying to make ends meet by renting out rooms, and comes into conflict with a tenant due to a bedbug infestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy sister, Jessica, is a drug addict,\u201d says the narrator of a story titled \u201cHappily Ever After,\u201d going on to observe: \u201cShe lives in subway tunnels when she isn\u2019t in jail or rehab. I\u2019ve tried taking her in. I\u2019ve tried giving her money, but I may as well send the bucks directly to her drug dealer. There\u2019s only one thing my sister and I agree on: our mother is not to know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Long War on Drugs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Anne Foster, PhD \u201995<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor as long as there has been recorded history, people have been taking substances to alter their mood, help them relieve pain, and, they long believed, connect to higher or greater powers,\u201d Foster writes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn every culture, people sought out those plants that could be eaten or smoked to calm them down, give them visions, or speed up their heart rate and brain function.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukeupress.edu\/the-long-war-on-drugs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this volume<\/a> from Duke University Press, Foster offers an overview of the U.S.\u2019s ongoing, deeply fraught efforts to interdict illegal drugs.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/01\/long-war-on-drugs-A.jpg\" alt=\"The cover of The Long War on Drugs\" class=\"wp-image-31054 size-full\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a campaign that stretches back to the early 20th century, punctuated by movements to double down on punishment, to advocate for legalization, or to treat addiction as a medical issue rather than a criminal one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne goal of this book is for readers to reexamine their own assumptions about not only how and why people take drugs but the kinds of policies that would best control drug use to those that are perhaps beneficial, or at the least less harmful,\u201d Foster, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indstate.edu\/faculty-staff\/anne-foster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">associate professor<\/a> of history at Indiana State University, writes in the introduction. \u201cThe problem is a complex one, and the more people who think deeply about it, the better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Butcher\u2019s Boy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thomas Perry \u201969<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perry is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomasperryauthor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prolific, bestselling author<\/a> of several mystery series, including one starring Jane Whitefield, a Native American woman who helps people disappear from dangerous situations. He also penned the limited TV series \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hulu.com\/series\/the-old-man-15d6075d-dc33-438b-851f-0d504405c91a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Old Man<\/a>,\u201d starring Jeff Bridges, which ran on FX in 2022 and streams on Hulu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/129910\/the-butchers-boy-by-thomas-perry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">acclaimed 1982 release<\/a>, his literary debut, won the coveted Edgar Award for best first mystery novel. It features two protagonists: a professional hitman who himself becomes the target of a murder-for-hire contract, and the female Justice Department analyst who is on his trail.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a shrewdly planned and executed thriller whose appeal is based on slick but sound technique,\u201d said the <em>New York Times<\/em> on the book\u2019s release. \u201cThere is an early hit, a suitable pause, and then another more difficult assassination. As the novel reaches its climax, pawns of the F.B.I. and the Mafia are offed at an accelerating pace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A decade after <em>The Butcher\u2019s Boy<\/em> was published, Perry penned a sequel, <em>Sleeping Dogs<\/em>, followed by two more.
