Among the biggest winners at the 2023 Emmy Awards\u2014handed out in a gala ceremony in mid-January 2024\u2014was a Cornellian: Scott Ferguson \u201982, BA \u201983, whose show \u201cSuccession\u201d raked in an impressive six statuettes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Arts & Sciences alum was an executive producer of the hit HBO show, whose fourth and final season ended in May 2023. In addition to being named Outstanding Drama Series (which garners an Emmy for its producers), it won for lead actor and actress, supporting actor, writing, and directing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ferguson\u2019s producing r\u00e9sum\u00e9<\/a> stretches back to 1994\u2014his debut was the Paul Newman dramedy Nobody\u2019s Fool<\/em>\u2014and includes such notable films and TV shows as the Oscar-winning Brokeback Mountain<\/em>, the Andy Kaufman biopic Man on the Moon<\/em>, and the critically acclaimed HBO drama \u201cThe Night Of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to this year\u2019s \u201cSuccession\u201d haul, Ferguson boasts multiple Emmy wins and nominations as well as awards from the U.S. directors\u2019 and producers\u2019 guilds; he shared a Peabody for the 2011 TV movie Temple Grandin<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A former theatre arts major, Ferguson has come back to the Hill to share his career experiences, including during the 2015 Sesquicentennial celebration and at a March 2023 event featuring alums in film titled \u201cFrom the Big Red to the Red Carpet<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018Any person … any study\u2019 was what I really needed when I came to Cornell, because I didn\u2019t know what I wanted to study,\u201d Ferguson said at the latter event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut when I took a 16mm film course that Marilyn Rivchin<\/a> [MFA \u201991] taught, I was bitten by the bug. I was drawn like a moth to the flame to something I was really interested in.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As many alums who are fans of \u201cSuccession\u201d know, the show has another Big Red tie: one of its main characters, Tom Wambsgans\u2014played by British star Matthew Macfadyen, who notched a total of three best actor nominations and two wins for the role\u2014is a Cornell alum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when Big Red history expert Corey Earle \u201907 ran a \u201cMarch Madness\u201d-style Twitter poll in 2023 to find the greatest fictional Cornellian<\/a> out of a field of 64, Wambsgans came in second\u2014after a Vet College “alum” in the 2011 film Water for Elephants<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

But viewers of the show are well aware that\u2014speaking vaguely so as to avoid spoilers\u2014in the final season of “Succession,” Wambsgans snags a far bigger prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
