Lori Balton \u201981 pondered that question during a not-particularly-unusual workday about a decade ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A veteran Hollywood location scout, Balton was in Hawaii exploring sites for <em>Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides<\/em>, the fourth film in the blockbuster series\u2014specifically, seeking a habitat for the film\u2019s alluring but dangerous mermaids, whose tears hold the key to eternal youth. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were having an argument about how they would go from their pools to the ocean,\u201d Balton recalls. \u201cAnd I just looked at everyone and started laughing and said, \u2018We\u2019re a group of adult human beings standing here <em>arguing about mermaids<\/em>.\u2019 I just loved the whole idea of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>On Stranger Tides<\/em> is just one of the dozens of films Balton has worked on during her more than <a href=\"https:\/\/loribalton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">three decades in the movie business<\/a>. Her r\u00e9sum\u00e9 includes a multiplex\u2019s worth of A-list projects and box-office hits: <em>Catch Me If You Can<\/em>, <em>Mr. &amp; Mrs. Smith<\/em>, <em>There Will Be Blood<\/em>, <em>Inception<\/em>, <em>Argo<\/em>, <em>The Aviator<\/em>, <em>3:10 to Yuma<\/em>, <em>Seabiscuit<\/em>, <em>Heat<\/em>, <em>A River Runs Through It<\/em>, <em>Memoirs of a Geisha<\/em>, <em>Best in Show<\/em>, and many more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I&#8217;ve been lucky in that I work with a lot of producers who really want the best location\u2014not the easiest location, not the cheapest location, but the location that best helps the director tell his or her story.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>While most of Balton\u2019s work has been in motion pictures, she has also scouted for TV shows such as \u201cTom Clancy\u2019s Jack Ryan\u201d on Amazon Prime and HBO\u2019s \u201cThe Young Pope.\u201d Upcoming movie releases include the long-awaited sequel <em>Top Gun: Maverick<\/em>, the live-action version of <em>The Little Mermaid<\/em>, and the Lucille Ball biopic <em>Being the Ricardos<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/02AFR-TX-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"A woman standing on a rock formation in the Texas desert. For last summer\u2019s Marvel hit <em>Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings<\/em>, she traveled to Vietnam\u2019s northern border, searching for landscapes that might resemble parts of China without the complexities of filming there. For the live-action remake of <em>The Lion King<\/em>, she took a crew to shoot footage in Yellowstone National Park that would help form the landscape of the movie\u2019s fearsome Elephant Graveyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been lucky in that I work with a lot of producers who really want the best location\u2014not the easiest location, not the cheapest location, but the location that best helps the director tell his or her story,\u201d says Balton, also an avid photographer who has posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lbalton\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hundreds of images on her Instagram<\/a>. \u201cThat\u2019s the most important thing, period. But you also have to find a location where you can bring the crew, where you can get the equipment to it, and where homeowners are going to cooperate. Part of what I love about the job is that each location is different and has its own set of parameters and issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, finding the right location isn\u2019t the hardest part: it\u2019s convincing the property owners to allow filming, which may carry a handsome fee but often means vacating the premises and giving access to hordes of strangers. \u201cWhen people are hesitant about it, I always ask, \u2018Can you deal with disruption in your life? (During her first\u2014and, as she recalls, last\u2014night in the projection booth, she forgot to advance the reel on the French arthouse classic <em>Hiroshima Mon Amour<\/em> and melted some frames: \u201cSo the film opens and you see it burning on the screen\u2014and, of course, all my friends are there for my big debut as a projectionist, and they\u2019re cheering and catcalling.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Balton moved to Boston after graduation, earning a master\u2019s in communication at B.U. and landing various positions on film sets around the city. Among her first was the 1989 action comedy <em>Second Sight<\/em>, starring John Larroquette and Bronson Pinchot. Balton calls it \u201ca horrible, horrible movie\u201d\u2014indeed, it has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes\u2014whose production is memorable for two reasons: it involved hauling a mock 747 through the streets of Boston, and she met her husband, a set electrician, on the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She relocated to Los Angeles and found work in location management\u2014the field responsible for a wide variety of logistics, from permits to fire safety to appeasing neighbors inconvenienced by the incursion of trailers and crew. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn my opinion, it\u2019s the most difficult job on a movie set\u2014because if anything goes wrong, no matter what department it is, it\u2019s always your fault,\u201d Balton says, \u201cand if anything goes <em>right<\/em>, there are always five producers in line ahead of you to claim the credit. But after she had her daughter\u2014who\u2019s now in her late twenties\u2014she began to realize that the 24\/7 demands of location management weren\u2019t compatible with motherhood, and she focused more on the scouting side. She eventually helped found the Location Managers Guild International, serving as its president for five years, and in 2013 became the first location professional invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences\u2014making her a voting member on the Oscars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0051239\/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Balton\u2019s page on the Internet Movie Database<\/a> has an impressive collection of credits stretching back to the late 1980s, but they don\u2019t include the time she found herself on the opposite side of the equation\u2014as the <em>scouted<\/em> rather than the scout. During the 2007\u201308 television season, a colleague asked to use Balton\u2019s family home in L.A.\u2019s Venice neighborhood to shoot an episode of the short-lived series \u201cWomen\u2019s Murder Club.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt first I was like, \u2018I don\u2019t know if I want all those strangers in my house,\u2019\u201d she recalls with a laugh. \u201cAnd then I thought: \u2018You cannot be such a hypocrite. You talk people into this every day.
