After a family tragedy, veteran dairy farmer Jeff Winton \u201980 founded Rural Minds in the hope of helping others<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having grown up on his family\u2019s dairy operation on the banks of Lake Erie in Chautauqua County, NY, Jeff Winton \u201980 is acutely familiar with the plight of the American farmer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The isolation. The unpredictability of climate. The misconception that farm life is carefree and relaxing, when in reality it\u2019s demanding and often backbreaking work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, especially, the ingrained belief that farmers should be able to solve their own problems\u2014even when it comes to internal struggles, which they seldom admit out loud. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As evidenced by the tragic fact that suicide rates in rural America are a staggering 64\u201368% higher than those in large urban areas, it\u2019s a thought pattern that all too often turns deadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re taught to be independent,\u201d says Winton, founder and CEO of\u00a0Rural Minds<\/a>, a nonprofit dedicated to tackling mental illness and substance use disorder in U.S. rural communities. \u201cYou\u2019re taught not to talk about your problems, to \u2018pull yourself up by your bootstraps,\u2019 and not to talk about something as personal as mental illness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through speaking engagements, community and media outreach, and dissemination of literature, webinars, and other resources, Rural Minds is singularly focused on addressing the mental health crisis in rural America\u2014including farming, fishing, and mining communities\u2014a contingent that has been largely left out of the national conversation around suicide prevention.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re taught to be independent. You\u2019re taught not to talk about your problems.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Through partnerships with rural-based organizations like the National Grange<\/a> and Cornell-based NY FarmNet<\/a>, Rural Minds collaborates with boots-on-the-ground social workers and mental health professionals who work directly with residents, connecting them with services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dismal rate of mental healthcare access for the nation’s roughly 46 million rural dwellers only makes the organization\u2019s work more vital.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance: such areas have 20% fewer primary care providers than urban ones, and 65% of rural counties have no psychiatrists. Even telemedicine\u2014which exploded in popularity during the COVID pandemic\u2014can be out of reach, as more than a quarter of rural homes lack high-speed Internet access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These statistics became excruciatingly palpable for Winton in 2012, when his nephew died by suicide on the family farm at age 28. He had, by all outward appearances, a happy life: he was athletic, polite, and outgoing. He was engaged to the mother of his children and was in the process of purchasing his first home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When his nephew died, Winton says, some in the community urged the family to keep the cause secret. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey advocated for us making up a reason, like a farming accident or a heart attack,\u201d says Winton, who still owns and operates two dairy farms. \u201cSuicide was so stigmatized that they didn\u2019t think my family, who had been in this farming community for many generations, should admit what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winton delivered the eulogy\u2014not only disclosing the cause of his nephew\u2019s death, but speaking about it in detail. And after forming Rural Minds in 2021, he has made it his mission to keep talking about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKnowing how to start a conversation about it can save a life,\u201d says Karen Govel McDermott \u201980, Winton\u2019s former CALS classmate, who handles Rural Minds\u2019 communications and web content. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKnowing the warning signs and getting information out to people who are struggling, who are afraid to talk about it because of the stigma, is so important. These are people who have never heard this kind of information before\u2014who haven\u2019t had access, who don\u2019t know where to turn for resources.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adds Winton: \u201cThere are a lot of people like my nephew who are suffering in silence. They think they should be able to just snap their fingers and get over it. But one thing we always talk about is that mental illness\u2014whether it\u2019s depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, substance use disorder\u2014is an illness just like cancer, diabetes, or heart disease. You don\u2019t just get over it. You need medical intervention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winton notes the group has been told by several rural residents or their family members that attending a Rural Minds event made the difference between life and death. He admits that he gets goosebumps just relaying some of the feedback he\u2019s received over the years.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was on the brink of suicide, and the things you said at that workshop made me realize I wasn\u2019t alone,\u201d one person reported from California. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been contemplating suicide for years, and my family doesn\u2019t know\u2014but as soon as you were done speaking, I called my mother, and when I get home this afternoon, she\u2019s going to help me get in to see a therapist and get the help I need,\u201d <\/em>a woman told Winton after a meeting in the Finger Lakes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greg Mruk is executive director of\u00a0<\/strong>NY FarmNet,\u00a0<\/strong>which was founded in CALS in 1986 to provide free consultation services for farmers navigating difficult financial or emotional circumstances. (Winton also sits on NY FarmNet\u2019s advisory board.)\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mruk says that much of Rural Minds\u2019 effectiveness in bringing its messaging to small-town America can be attributed to Winton\u2019s own agricultural upbringing. Rural residents, he notes, may not be as receptive to \u201csome slick guy who shows up in a suit\u201d\u2014but when Winton speaks, they see themselves in him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe never forgot where he came from, and he\u2019s able to make that connection, whether it\u2019s in North Dakota, South Carolina, or Upstate New York,\u201d says Mruk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou shake Jeff\u2019s hand, and it\u2019s a little calloused. I\u2019ve more than once had a conversation with him after he\u2019s just come out of the milkhouse. That sends a message to the farmer. \u2018You understand my life. You understand where I\u2019m coming from.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
