Even small noises can feel magnified or jumbled to her, and any movement around her is highly distracting. Working in public spaces like libraries is nearly impossible, not only because of her sensitivity to stimuli itself but also the anxiety that goes with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lsc.cornell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learning Strategies Center<\/a>\u2019s new sensory room, a space where students can escape sensory overload, has provided Rodriguez with a unique refuge. On her first visit, she planned to stay only a few minutes. I go in with my anxiety kind of heightened, but after I sit there for a few minutes, I come back down and then I can work.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Located on the fourth floor of the Computing and Communications Center on the Ag Quad, the sensory room provides a space where students, especially those who identify as neurodivergent, can have greater control over their level of sensory input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Converted from a conference room, the dimly lit space is divided into two areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I go in with my anxiety kind of heightened, but after I sit there for a few minutes, I come back down and then I can work.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Alesandr\u00e9a Rodriguez \u201927<\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>A sensory-seeking area has numerous fidget toys, lights that can be touched on and off, and textured objects such as smooth and rough rocks and a book of different materials to touch. For higher-level thinking or learning, this kind of space really presents all the environmental conditions that are beneficial.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sensory room fulfills a repeated request from students in the <a href=\"https:\/\/lsc.cornell.edu\/neurodiversity-at-cornell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Neurodiversity @ Cornell<\/a> community, Ard\u00f3n says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early in 2023, Ard\u00f3n and Jennifer Bokaer-Smith, MS \u201997, the Center\u2019s senior associate director, started working with Racker, a regional organization that supports people with disabilities, to determine best practices for a sensory room and essential items to help students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It really is about improving well-being, mental health, and academic performance.<\/p>\n<cite><strong>Florencia Ard\u00f3n<\/strong>, study skills lecturer<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The result is a space that students describe as calming, relaxing, soothing, and essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt sounded like something I\u2019ve been dreaming about for the last three years, and when I went, it was everything I imagined it would be,\u201d says Queen Guobadia \u201924, a global development major in CALS whose sensitivity to light makes it difficult to concentrate for long periods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI also just tend to overwork myself. I\u2019m often tired. The sensory room does a wonderful job of functioning as a kind of rest stop in the middle of campus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The benefits extend to neurotypical students as well.
