it needs to be retired as a metaphor for describing the forces at play for women in STEM fields,\u201d observes Munoz, a <a href=\"https:\/\/lisampmunoz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">science writer<\/a> based in Washington, DC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWomen are not dripping through holes in the system; Subtitled <em>Timeless Truths from Black American Trailblazers<\/em>, it offers short biographies of more than 100 notables, emphasizing quotations that carry motivational messages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It shares wisdom from such famous names as Booker T. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/729660\/the-good-luck-book-by-heather-alexander\/9780744084696\/?ref=PRHB7BD76FBDB&amp;aid=14813&amp;linkid=PRHB7BD76FBDB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">her latest<\/a>, a nonfiction work aimed at children ages seven to 11, the <a href=\"https:\/\/heatheralexanderbooks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arts &amp; Sciences alum<\/a> delves into superstitions and folklore from around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book is divided into sections including traditions based around animals (such as black cats being ill omens), the natural world (\u201cknocking on wood\u201d), and the human body (saying \u201cbless you\u201d in response to a sneeze). <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Other topics include the theatrical admonition to \u201cBreak a leg!\u201d\u2014meaning to have a good performance\u2014and the symbolism of the number 13 in different societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHumans do all sorts of things based on superstitions, even though we know it may not be very logical or scientific,\u201d Alexander writes. \u201cOften, we don\u2019t even realize some of our actions\u2014like covering our mouths when we yawn\u2014are actually derived from superstitions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Critical Hits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>J. Robert Lennon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lennon, the <a href=\"https:\/\/english.cornell.edu\/j-robert-lennon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ann S. Bowers Professor of English<\/a> on the Hill and a prolific fiction writer, co-edits this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graywolfpress.org\/books\/critical-hits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collection of essays<\/a> on topics related to video games. In single-player games, I usually invent a character unlike myself, often a woman, and costume them fancifully, for kicks.
