{"id":30053,"date":"2023-12-12T14:50:48","date_gmt":"2023-12-12T19:50:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/?p=30053"},"modified":"2023-12-15T10:32:20","modified_gmt":"2023-12-15T15:32:20","slug":"farsad-comedian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.cornell.edu\/cornellians\/farsad-comedian\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Social Justice Comedian\u2019 Mines Jokes both Highbrow and Low"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\">A star of NPR\u2019s \u2018Wait Wait \u2026 Don\u2019t Tell Me!,\u2019 Negin Farsad \u201998 has steadily gained fame across radio, TV, movies, podcasts, and more<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>Lindsay Lennon<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">\u201cI am an Iranian-American Muslim female\u2014like all of you,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/neginfarsad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Negin Farsad \u201998<\/a> proclaims in her 2016 TED Talk, delivered to a mixed-gender audience that appears to be predominantly white. in mid-December, she was on the panel for a \u201cWait Wait\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carnegiehall.org\/Calendar\/2023\/12\/15\/Wait-Wait-Dont-Tell-Me-0730PM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">live show<\/a> at NYC\u2019s Carnegie Hall.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past decade or so, Farsad has become a familiar face\u2014and voice\u2014in nearly every medium of American political and topical humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has written for, and appeared on, TV shows on Comedy Central, HBO, Hulu, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her byline has run in a range of publications, from <em>The Guardian<\/em> to <em>Oprah<\/em> <em>Magazine<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-solid-color\"><blockquote><p>Farsad has become a familiar face\u2014and voice\u2014in nearly every medium of American political and topical humor.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>(In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afar.com\/magazine\/what-a-mycomeditations-magic-mushroom-retreat-is-really-like\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent piece<\/a> for <em>Afar<\/em> magazine, Farsad chronicled her experience taking magic mushrooms as part of a weeklong &#8220;healing retreat&#8221; in Jamaica.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Farsad\u2019s 2016 book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hachettebookgroup.com\/titles\/negin-farsad\/how-to-make-white-people-laugh\/9781455558223\/?lens=grand-central-publishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>How to Make White People Laugh\u00ad<\/em><\/a>\u2014a collection of essays about growing up Iranian-American and her ongoing quest to fight racism with jokes\u2014was nominated for the prestigious Thurber Prize for American Humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, she directed and produced <em>The Muslims Are Coming!<\/em>, in which she and fellow Muslim comedians embarked on a standup tour of America, including conservative states like Alabama and Tennessee. She even lends her voice to video game characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have the most fun acting, and it\u2019s not the thing I\u2019m known for,\u201d reflects Farsad. \u201cTo be a standup comedian requires eating an incredible amount of dirt, testing new jokes all the time. The amount of output required is endless. In the minutes I\u2019m onstage, and it\u2019s working, it\u2019s incredible\u2014but it\u2019s very difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>To be a standup comedian requires eating an incredible amount of dirt, testing new jokes all the time.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The daughter of Iranian immigrants, Farsad was born in Connecticut and spent most of her childhood in the desert resort town of Palm Springs, CA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Driven academically, she was always interested in politics and governance, but caught the theater bug in middle school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She got her first big laugh on stage when her high school drama teacher cast her as a nameless kitchen wench\u2014\u201carguably, the least important of the kitchen wenches,\u201d she recalls\u2014in a production of <em>Once Upon a Mattress.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>\u201cIt felt pretty miraculous,\u201d Farsad says, sitting<strong> <\/strong>on the sunny balcony of her NYC apartment, where she lives with her husband and daughter. \u201cI think I understood, subconsciously, that I could say literally anything in that moment, and people would listen, because I had just made them laugh so hard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The enchanting power of humor was apparent to Farsad from a young age. When her mother\u2019s sisters would visit from Iran, she\u2019d spend hours sitting and cooking with them, listening to them gossip in Azeri, a Turkish dialect. Hillary Clinton and former U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel while at Columbia; after graduating, she worked as a public policy advisor for NYC\u2019s Campaign Finance Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the while, her heart was in the NYC comedy scene\u2014but her mind wouldn\u2019t entertain the idea of doing it full time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t accept this about myself,\u201d she says, \u201cbecause it felt like a really narcissistic profession.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One day, she recalls, friends staged an \u201cintervention of sorts,\u201d urging Farsad to plunge into her comedy career.
