A star of NPR\u2019s \u2018Wait Wait \u2026 Don\u2019t Tell Me!,\u2019 Negin Farsad \u201998 has steadily gained fame across radio, TV, movies, podcasts, and more<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am an Iranian-American Muslim female\u2014like all of you,\u201d Negin Farsad \u201998<\/a> proclaims in her 2016 TED Talk, delivered to a mixed-gender audience that appears to be predominantly white. Titled \u201cA Highly Scientific Taxonomy of Haters<\/a>,\u201d Farsad\u2019s eight-minute presentation is packed with decidedly nonscientific facts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For instance: a pie chart depicts Americans as 90 percent \u201cwonderful people,\u201d 7 percent \u201chaters\u201d \u2026 and 3 percent \u201cFlorida.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or a line graph showing, on a scale from \u201ccomedy\u201d to \u201cbrochure,\u201d that the average American prefers to learn new information while laughing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As she asserts: \u201cYou could be hearing an interesting treatise on income equality that\u2019s encased in a really sophisticated poop joke.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the audience is on board\u2014which hardly takes long, given Farsad\u2019s rapid-fire delivery and bubbly disposition\u2014it seems that her line graph may actually ring true, as evinced by the many belly laughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A self-described \u201csocial justice comedian,\u201d Farsad hosts a podcast, Fake the Nation<\/a><\/em>, and is a frequent panelist and guest host on NPR\u2019s popular weekly comic quiz show \u201cWait Wait \u2026 Don\u2019t Tell Me!<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past decade or so, Farsad has become a familiar face\u2014and voice\u2014in nearly every medium of American political and topical humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has written for, and appeared on, TV shows on Comedy Central, HBO, Hulu, and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her byline has run in a range of publications, from The Guardian<\/em> to Oprah<\/em> Magazine<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farsad has become a familiar face\u2014and voice\u2014in nearly every medium of American political and topical humor.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

(In a recent piece<\/a> for Afar<\/em> magazine, Farsad chronicled her experience taking magic mushrooms as part of a weeklong “healing retreat” in Jamaica.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farsad\u2019s 2016 book, How to Make White People Laugh\u00ad<\/em><\/a>\u2014a collection of essays about growing up Iranian-American and her ongoing quest to fight racism with jokes\u2014was nominated for the prestigious Thurber Prize for American Humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2014, she directed and produced The Muslims Are Coming!<\/em>, in which she and fellow Muslim comedians embarked on a standup tour of America, including conservative states like Alabama and Tennessee. (A sequel is in the works.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She wrote, directed, and starred in the romantic comedy 3rd Street Blackout<\/em>, appeared in 2022\u2019s Not Okay <\/em>on Hulu, and co-directed the documentary Nerdcore Rising, <\/em>featuring Weird Al Yankovic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of her favorite gigs, she says, is voiceover work\u2014particularly her role on Adult Swim\u2019s \u201cBirdgirl\u201d as Meredith the Mind Taker (also streamed on Max). She even lends her voice to video game characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have the most fun acting, and it\u2019s not the thing I\u2019m known for,\u201d reflects Farsad. \u201cTo be a standup comedian requires eating an incredible amount of dirt, testing new jokes all the time. The amount of output required is endless. In the minutes I\u2019m onstage, and it\u2019s working, it\u2019s incredible\u2014but it\u2019s very difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The daughter of Iranian immigrants, Farsad was born in Connecticut and spent most of her childhood in the desert resort town of Palm Springs, CA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Driven academically, she was always interested in politics and governance, but caught the theater bug in middle school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She got her first big laugh on stage when her high school drama teacher cast her as a nameless kitchen wench\u2014\u201carguably, the least important of the kitchen wenches,\u201d she recalls\u2014in a production of Once Upon a Mattress.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt felt pretty miraculous,\u201d Farsad says, sitting <\/strong>on the sunny balcony of her NYC apartment, where she lives with her husband and daughter. \u201cI think I understood, subconsciously, that I could say literally anything in that moment, and people would listen, because I had just made them laugh so hard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The enchanting power of humor was apparent to Farsad from a young age. When her mother\u2019s sisters would visit from Iran, she\u2019d spend hours sitting and cooking with them, listening to them gossip in Azeri, a Turkish dialect. (Though Farsad speaks Farsi to her parents, Turkish and Farsi are spoken in the Iranian province from which they emigrated.)<\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cIt had so many idioms and expressions,\u201d she recalls. \u201cI was fascinated by the chatter and storytelling, and I remember enjoying how funny they were.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Hill, Farsad double-majored in government and theatre arts in the College of Arts & Sciences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was a National Scholar and wrote for the Daily Sun<\/em>\u2014but it was her time as a member of a sketch comedy group, the Skits-O-Phrenics (now known as the Skits<\/a>), that \u201cended up cementing a bit of a path for me.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After stints teaching English and waiting tables in Europe, she followed her fellow Skits to NYC to form a new sketch comedy group\u2014while earning dual master\u2019s degrees in African American studies and public policy from Columbia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She interned with then-Sen. Hillary Clinton and former U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel while at Columbia; after graduating, she worked as a public policy advisor for NYC\u2019s Campaign Finance Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the while, her heart was in the NYC comedy scene\u2014but her mind wouldn\u2019t entertain the idea of doing it full time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t accept this about myself,\u201d she says, \u201cbecause it felt like a really narcissistic profession.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day, she recalls, friends staged an \u201cintervention of sorts,\u201d urging Farsad to plunge into her comedy career. Young and unattached, she took the risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Says Farsad: \u201cIt took me getting two additional Ivy League degrees and being a serious adult professional\u2014wearing pantsuits, in charge of crazy data sets for campaign finance for the City of New York\u2014to realize, \u2018I don\u2019t think this is what I was supposed to do.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has gone on to make a name for herself in the political humor landscape\u2014from her regular NPR appearances to an animated New York Times<\/em> op-ed<\/a> on \u201cThe Secret History of Muslims in the U.S.\u201d to being featured in an episode of Hillary and Chelsea Clinton\u2019s 2022 Apple TV+ series \u201cGutsy.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, she notes, she also does a fair amount of non-political comedy\u2014about everything from \u201cnepo babies\u201d and episodes of \u201cThe Golden Bachelor\u201d to the time she discovered her mom had never tasted a taco<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSomething I believe in strongly,\u201d she says, \u201cis that smart people also want to talk about dumb things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
